Captain's Quick Report: Rivendell Chicken Run
By beaks and feathers! Clucks and Herders! 'Tis not been often that I return back to the Bree-land with a tale centrally about chickens, to share with my fellows in the Bree Captain's Guild, and it must be certainly one of the more rare sorts of ventures to be documented in our private archives thus far!
It started with a faint clucking you see... on a late and lazy afternoon sun settling over the Bree Homesteads, particularly the small cottage with which I was resting peacefully, after having ridden many times across the land in recent weeks, mostly to and from the Shire on business representing the Captain's Guild of Bree... But then this persistent clucking continued to rouse me, like a gentle alarm bell urging all members to convene for the gathering dinner of the evening.
And then, what have you, it dawned on me with such haste, that I was out-the-door and leaving behind the half-finished paperwork sitting still on my desk inside, already whistling for my trusted steed to gallop forth hurriedly for the exit from the homesteads.
There was a caravan of chickens to catch!
And so the story went on from there, the advertised Rivendell Chicken Run, seen on notice boards managed by the Grey Repository Archives, and also in the Bramblebury Gazette, had made itself known quite a few days in advance to good-hearted folk across the land who wouldn't mind helping escort this latest delivery of fine-feathered poultry of Farmer Sandson's in the Shire by Michel Delving, all the way across most of Eriador to the distant valley of Rivendell; for after all, perhaps even Elves have need of... scrambled egg dishes?
Oh dear me, perhaps such lore and appetites of the Elves must be left for another day to correct myself on, for this is a Captain's Quick Report! And short and swift must it be, this quick report, as policy dictates of the Bree Captain's Guild, and myself. While I was able to join forth the caravan of chickens and herders in time just outside the Bree-land Homesteads, the journey after that was quite a busy one, filled with wary looks at every nasty beast with a nasty look that might drop our deliveries dead on their feathered-backs. But there were moments of rest along the way, and even brief cheer and joy from the cluckful chickens themselves, as evidenced from their many flappings about throughout each break, and while on the journey too!
And so I end this early report here, with another, separately wrapped, collection of sketches and very, very, very rough colorings from memorable parts of this eventful journey -- to submit forth to the Grey Repository Archives directly here in the valley of Rivendell. As always, it is my hopes and plan to pen a more fulfilling, and in-depth account, of these sort of events in the land, at a later time appropriate to circumstance.
The other dear Hobbits and herders have already begun their own journey back home to the far Shire, to bring the good news of the successful delivery to Master Sandson himself. You would perhaps not believe some of the most unique names many of these chickens had, many appearing in the likeness of quite famous hobbits and other folk of the Free Peoples, and that's already on top of the many highly renowned force of chicken-herders that accompanied the feathered-friends today! Names from near and far, by my Bree Captain's Badge do I tell you. With them all together these recent few hours, you would have thought it was another grand reunion of old friends and allies. Which perhaps indeed, it was!
What a sight today, and an outstanding example of fine-feathery-delivery-of-poultry business in Middle-earth!
