The Shire

Estarfin the Wise

It was late. It was dark that few noticed we two walking through their village, with our horses following closely. Those who did moved away, their eyes wide.

"We mean you no harm," Estarfin tried, having first spoken to them in quenya.

We stopped by a stone wall, and looked over the well tended fields. These folk certainly loved their land.

"I cannot easily believe that Eru intends folk like these to suffer." I mused aloud, thinking of possible wars ahead... thinking of a contingent at Fornost in the past.

APPARENTLY, while tending to the soil for sowing season on the Longburrow Farm™, I ended up accidently destroying the house of this young hedgehog amidst my berry crops. The cheeky lad started then to follow me around literally everywhere I went, as he seems to think I now owe him food, shelter and protection for the irreparable damage to "his" property!

Bemused, the Hobbit and Beorning shrug, then continue sipping their drinks.

"Oi!" exclaims the baffled Dwarf, who then hastily clambers about on his hands and knees gathering the Hobbit's coins from the floor.

Instead, the tall Beorning stoops down to speak to the tiny barkeep and says "A flagon of mead for me," without offering payment.

With a grand gesture the Dwarf sweeps the coins to the floor with his broad hand, replacing them with coins of his own, and says, "A tankard of ale for me and whatever my friends are having." He steps back from the counter, fully expecting the Beorning to follow suit.

Reflections: Fishing at the Faire

Diary

For the last three days, I have been attending the Farmer's Faire. It is an event that the hobbits put on, mainly in the Shire, although there are related events happening in Celondim, Duillond, Thorin's Hall and Bree.

As one might expect with hobbits, the event celebrates their food, with plenty of it available to sample - and, as a farmer myself, I was delighted to find there is a visiting farmer in Hobbiton to discuss our profession with and perhaps learn about some new crops.
