The Thane of Marton gave Leoffrith the use of this princely steed, Kestrel, who is as noble amongst horses as Leoffrith is common. There's no question that Kestrel is wiser than Leoffrith, and knows it. He is characteristically unruffled by almost anything, and patiently endures Leoffrith telling him to do what he was already going to do anyway. It's possible he carries a bit of the blood of the Mearas (and if so, the Thane is lucky to have him). Sadly, Leoffrith expects to have to give him up when he returns to report the outcome of his endeavors.
