Troubles in the forest

As the sun rose, I heard some shouts coming from the forest. I left my supplies near the lake and ran near the trees to see what was all this fuss about. I then saw one of those little folk, hobbits I believe they are called, for I have never seen one before, running at a quick pace, with three bad looking man running behind, trying to capture him.

"Get back here halfling, we just wan' to play " shouted one of the men. They were armed with old swords and one of them with a bow, and could easily manage to hurt someone. The hobbit looked anything but a fighter, and I believe he could not been able to do anything if captured. Something ought to be done.

I observed while the hobbit lose his breath and hide behind a bush. However, he could not hide there for long because the place was infested with some big looking spiders. The scared hobbit ran right at the brigand's feet. One of the men grabbed the little guy and started emptying his pockets, while he shouted desperately.

At the time, I was hiding by a nearby bush, still undetected. First, I had to take out the one with the bow, and the other two should be of no trouble at close quarter range. The only dangerous thing about my plan was if they decide to hurt the hobbit. I decided to throw my spear, hitting the one with the bow in the back. He fell to his knees with a shout, and I ran towards him to push my spear out from his back. I rushed towards the other two as quickly as I could while the hobbit managed to escape. I bashed one of them in the head with my shield and carved my spear right into the other's chest, enough for them to fall as well.

"Thank ye!" said the hobbit with a wide smile in his face. He said to me he was just a simple farmer looking for some plants on the forest. He said he ran into one of the encampments of these brigands. He then gave me some coin for my trouble, which I did not accept, and I got back to the lake.

Arriving at the lake, I found all my food to have disappeared, probably eaten by some nearby bears.

Perhaps I should have accepted the coin...
