First impressions had a power to them. The smallest of moments could provoke a myriad of thoughts. Ryheric sought the challenge of being able to capture these moods in the music he made. Though he knew he was not a real musician, and that the improvised nature of his work meant no piece would ever be polished or perfect, often not even tidy, he used his lute as an outlet.

"I ain't brought nothin' for ye, this time, Lucy. Y'goin' t'let us pass?" The goose had landed before them, blocking the road. She surveyed the three of them with judgmental, beady eyes. The three of them balked, Winnie seeming to find Ryheric's sudden predicament hilarious, Cwennie meanwhile, unimpressed with how wary Ryheric was of the animal. After such bravery against the brigands, apparently all it took was a haughty bird with teeth to make the man stop in his tracks.

She had chosen a good horse, strong head, the gait a marvel of surety. Each stride landed even. But the look on Winnie's face to be back in the saddle again after so long away from her home was his favourite part.

The deadliest forces in some parts of Middle Earth were not anything malicious or violent, but just nature at work. The caravan was on schedule and it was unusual for the melt to have lasted so long in one part of the mountains. The winter had been harsher than usual.
