Background
Jozlyn comes from a family of prosperous grape farmers in Bree. She is the oldest of three daughters and expertly trained in cooking. Jozlyn is well educated and ladylike, but can be a bit naive and perhaps too trusting of strangers. Her primary work has been as a chef, catering events in the area such as weddings and hobbit birthday-parties. She much prefers the terms "caterer" or "chef" rather than "cook", lest she be confused with a mess hall cook or one of Butterbur's staff.
While away on business, Jozlyn wandered into the Old Forest seeking fresh ingredients, not realizing the dangers. She was lost for a night before being discovered by brigands, who took her to the Southern Bree-Fields in hopes of a ransom. But she would not divulge her name, only that she was a chef doing work in Buckland. Thinking her useless to them, they nearly killed her on the spot. Fortunately, someone suggested she be kept as a cook instead, as they had no time for such tedious chores themselves. There she stayed captive for a year, while her fiance searched the Old Forest to no avail.
Finally, Jozlyn took matters into her own hands. After much planning, gathering, and waiting for the opportune moment, she was able to poison the stew at a particularly large feast. It killed many, and rendered the rest ill enough that she was able to flee, taking with her a good deal of knowledge about the brigands.
Upon her return to Bree, Jozlyn tried to find some semblance of a normal life again, though keeping a low profile. She learned that her fiance had eventually given up hope, thinking her dead, and was now with someone else. She had also lost her love of cooking, having been a prisoner to it for the last year.
Against her once honest nature, Jozlyn began inventing various stories to explain her disappearance. The tales likely sprung from her guilt over the poisoning, or a desire to block the whole thing from her memory. But as the web of lies became more tangled, she now refuses to speak of it at all.
Jozlyn blames her own naivety and ignorance for the loss of her fiance and the life she had before. As a result, she now devotes her time to reading books and practicing methods of self-defense. Her friends and family grow increasingly worried over her refusal to speak of her disappearance, as well as her reluctance to leave the house.
