Background
Attorwulf was born in a wealthy family in the Westfold. He was the only son of his parents, having 4 sisters. His father was ecstatic at the fact he now had a boy to raise into a man, and wasted no time teaching him all there was to know about being a true man of Rohan.
His upbringing was filled with combat training, horse riding and bonding with the other Men as his father found that incredibly important. Everything looked up for the young lad and his family when there was a marriage arranged with a maiden of an equally wealthy but more powerful family. His betrothed was a kind yet strong-headed woman with similar interests to Attorwulf; a guaranteed match they bet. I can't say Attorwulf ever fell in love with her, but he did appreciate her a lot and did his best to meet her expectations.
To celebrate his coming of age and upcoming marriage, Attorwulf was taken on a hunting trip with his father and some close family friends. Many days did they hunt, and were often successful. On the way back they had a lot to take back to their people as a gift (and of course to show off).
On the way back they were ambushed by orcs, however, and Attorwulf immediately got swept up into his first real battle against the enemy. Bravely he fought against them, but eventually he and his horse were knocked down by a warg-rider. He doesn't remember anything beyond that point but he was gravely injured after hitting the ground, and his horse sadly had to be put down because it's injuries were too horrible to ever recover from.
Attorwulf would wake up in Rivendell after long slumber, his father having taken him there as the abilities of men were not enough to heal his hurts. The elves had helped the young man tremendously, not only keeping him alive but also making sure his injuries would not bother him too much for the rest of his life. Only a limp would remain on one side, but hurt it never truly did.
One thing that couldn't be fixed, though, was his voice. The warg had tried to kill him by mauling his throat, only failing due to the swift reaction of one of the other Men there. The elves were able to heal the most damning parts, but his vocal chords never really went back to normal. Speaking hurt, his voice raw and unpleasant. There were further attempts to heal it but to no avail. Attorwulf chose a life of muteness, only speaking when people didn't believe his story.
But wait, it gets worse. When he was finally ready to leave the news was broken to him that his betrothed had moved on. He never blamed her for it as he had learned just how dire his state had been, but did feel a bit abandoned. Once in Rohan people treated him differently. They looked at him like he was weak, like they would look at an infant. Some even looked disgusted. Worst of all his fathers gaze: one of disappointment. Even he had given up on him and his future.
Attorwulf eventually left Rohan behind, choosing a life of exile in which he became determined to prove his worth even if he was now, well, disabled. He now travels around, sometimes still checking in on Rohan to see if there is need of his aid there. Home he never went back to again, only wanting to return when he finally is the man his father wanted him to be.
It's been over a decade since.
Attorwulf is a kind man even if he doesn't always look like it. The air around him can be a bit aloof but trust me when I say he isn't that at all. If anything he is incredibly nervous, still battling with his own demons of the past.
He usually communicates through writing in a notebook, but is capable of sign language as well.
