Background

As a result of certain profoundly serious events relating to a powerful Gondorian family, two unfortunate craftsmen had to flee from Gondor in order to secure the life and well-being of themselves and their three little children. The journey to safety was long and harsh, but it succeeded to the extent that parents were able to leave the children to the care of their trustful friend and to continue their own exile without needing to worry that the children would face the far-reaching revenge of the noble family. Ever since these events the girls, Usva, Utu and Sumu, have been living and growing up with Amanareth -aunt Am- in a small cottage in the Far Chetwood, each creating their own life-plans and interests for future to come.

Sumu, who has the most accurate memories of the events of escape, has been carrying the burden of the eldest sibling with varying success, as her feelings towards the two people that once were her parents, and towards the deeds they committed in past, seem too great and conflicting for her to confront in any other way than by building an iron wall of defense, a hiding place consisting of rock-solid obedience to the formal rule of law (and to formality and clarity in general; among other things Sumu has a strong attachment to march music, and has serious problems in understanding any other branch of music). Hence the choice of occupation: Sumu has pledged her allegiance to the guarding and protecting forces of Bree-land.

Usva, “the middle one”, a happy and cheerful, somewhat unpolished person by nature, has decided to capture the world in its entirety to her “book of experiences”, being both eager to leave the too secure and isolated (and, in her opinion, definitely too boring) place of home, and slightly inexperienced and uncertain, she seeks the right path for her to fulfill her dreams of seeing as much as possible, and that of sharing that what she has met in her (forthcoming) journeys, with fellow human beings. In order to be able to finance her life as an explorer, and to honor  the only memory of her parents she still carries with her Usva has adopted two of of her parents' principle ambitions: She collects gems and has become a proficient cook.

Utu, the youngest of the three, who has no recall of the dramatic events that happened in her early childhood, has shared the way of life of her aunt; she has become a healer – or a “witch” (the term is applied mostly in relation to the slightly eccentric aunt Am). As a person she is a silent and calm; she shares a profound - yet not fully developed - understanding of nature and its inhabitants. She has no ambitions of leaving her childhood home but is nevertheless urged to do this by aunt Am who rightly claims, that she needs to get distance to the socially isolated environment she has been living in and to know the customs of different kinds of people in order to be able to effectively help them.
