Background

The young Adam Hornblower moved from the Southfarthing to Bree hoping to repeat the success of the old man Tobold, who brought the famous pipe-weed from that town, but what he found in that place full of strangers and tall people was only love for Rose Riverhopper. For her, he had settled in Staddle just outside the smiling and confusing Bree.

From their union two children were born Robetto, the youngest, and Robertoc, the older one. This is the story of the latter. From an early age he showed little interest in the quiet work of the fields, but he liked the company and the adventures in the woods and in the city... it was not difficult that he got in trouble with the guards it was to these that the father turned in a desperate attempt to calm the young man's exuberant hyperactivity.

It was Tralli, a dwarf of the Blue Mountains who had lived in Bree for some time now and took him under his wing and began to mentor him. He instructed him on the art of the sword and shield and saw the little barefoot creature was fascinated by his training and learned quickly and well. But, there is always a ‘but’ in an uncommon story, that partially transformed the Hobbit, and I don't mean it physically.

The peaceful and indifferent soul to the outside world seemed to continually disappear and the sense of a greater duty, to defend the needy from abuse and bullying, began to take their place in his head and heart. He found the "needs" of his Bree fellows frivolous and superficial; nothing was worth facing for them. Yet strange and disturbing news from the East and South started to came from the travellers staying at the Prancing Pony… And even from the nearby mounds.

So with his little brother, Robetto, who just as him had inherited from who knows what relative the recklessness and the desire for adventure, they began to patrol and defend the lands around Bree, making himself noticed by a foreigner who lived not far from the town; the man was known to everyone by the name of Saerdan. From this “Ranger” (so everyone called him) came his last lessons of protector and lessons of life. No ogre or brigand dared to approach the lands of Bree thanks to those two ‘little ones’ and their tall, new mentor.

But time passed and the Ranger had to leave the company, called back to the North and took the young Robetto with him to complete his training. So Robertoc learned a great lesson, you cannot save the world by yourself!’ And so he began to look far and wide for people like him and found a group, or rather a family, a clan that does not sit idly waiting for the inevitable.

And a clan needs a name, a symbol of an idea to follow to lead! Come now Robertoc, think! What's strong, vigorous and frightening?. What's idle, plump and tender? Uhmmm a dragon? A pack of wolves? No, the first could only be legends of the Dwarves, and wolves are friends of the Goblins! But… a bear! Yes, a bear! I will honour this proud beast and make it the symbol of the new alliance! Innocently powerful and deadly… and also greedy! The Clan of the Bear!
