The Bree-land Harvest Home

Date:
November 1st, 2020
Time:
Location:
The village of Browning, Bree-land

Event details:

Summer has fled, and in its wake, the fertile fields of Bree-land give up their bounty to the coming season. The month of Harvestmath has arrived! And with it, the air cools, the sun dances a little lower through the painted leaves, and farmers and townsfolk alike celebrate for the wealth of their land's goodness.

The days are yet mild, and the nights bring a pleasant crispness, coaxing gatherings of friends and family to draw near and share in the company of loved ones. Doughty hands work tirelessly to bring in the provisions from the fields, to bottle and can and dry and preserve, and to share the abundance with all. Tables are laden, guests invited, and hearths stoked.

Good fortune for the coming winter is wished for, along with thanks for the year that has been. Benevolent fates are welcomed, while those of mischief and trouble must be warded against! A few extra candles in the window, an offering of fruits and vegetables to appease what spirits may dance in the falling darkness, and perhaps a mask to trick any fae that seeks to enter your home.

The folk of Bree-land are welcomed, one and all, to pay visit to the hamlet of Browning, just beyond the south-gate and along the Road going east. A well-known farmer has made a tradition of opening his home each autumn, for merry-making, dancing, feasting, and fellowship. The doors are opened at sunup on the first day of November, and remain so until dawn of the following day. Neighbors, friends, and travelers, are all welcome to share a seat at the laden table, to swap a tale beside the roaring fire, to dance to their heart's delight, or to simply sit and sip a cup of warm cider. Stay for an hour, or stay for the night!

But don't forget your mask, if you should think yourself brave enough to venture home after sunset!

The village of Browning lies just a mile or two east of the Bree-town south-gate. Beyond the golden barley fields and ripened apple groves, a humble farmhouse sends up wisps of chimney smoke from within a copse of trees. Maple and elm giants overshadow the wide, green lawn, delicately shedding their crimson and yellow crowns in the cool breeze. As you draw near, the gentle clang of a cowbell somewhere in the distance mingles with the muffled sound of clanging dishes and laughter from within the house. A wooden tub of shining, red apples sits beside the front porch, inviting you to pluck one on your way in (and perhaps on your way out!). A picnic table is situated beneath a towering old elm, inviting you to enjoy the afternoon sunlight in the open air.

Beyond the propped-open front door, you enter a long, spacious room that has been largely cleared of furniture. Already, you smell the sweetness of baking fruit, spices, and other delectables. A few benches with cushions line the rustic walls, ready to offer respite to those who may fancy a jig or reel when evening arrives. Swags of colored leaves and red berries lay over the doorway leading into the side-room, where a long, wooden table is set and ready to welcome hungry friends. The cook, known colloquially as “Missus Hopmead”, bustles in and out of sight, ruddy-cheeked and full of good humor as she dutifully refills platters and reheats kettles.

When the briskness of evening kisses the air, a man with a fiddle takes up a stool in the corner of the living room. If you’re from Bree-parts, you may know him as “Mad Gran”; a quiet and peculiar fellow, who’d rather rosin a bow than chat with strangers. Don your mask (if you brought one!) and see who might be coaxed into a dance!
