She had met up with her captain acquaintance again. They were sitting in front of the fire she liked so much and were engaged deep in conversation. She had told him a little about her life and how her parents disapproved of her staying at the Pony for any length of time. Watching him, Lieve finally dared to ask how he came by the scar on his face. His face clouded over and for a while she thought he would not answer. He suggested they find a more secluded spot to sit, so found a room in the back of the Pony.
They found seats and sat in silence for a while. Then, slowly, he told her that he had killed a man. She was shocked. As she thought about it she decided that it wasn't really surprising, he was a battlehardened captain after all. He told her of how it happened, but it had not been in a battle as she had expected. She was horrified, did not know where to look. He was oblivious of her distress, apparently reliving the killing. She got up, made excuse and left. He seemed surprised to see her leave but did nothing to stop her. Hardly seeing where she was going, she left the Pony and headed home.
A day or two later, she recieved a letter from him, containing a note of affection and an apology for his behaviour towards her, though she did not understand what he should be apologising for. Surprised and not sure what to think, she wrote back.
Dear Captain,
Thank you for your Note of Affection. I must admit it did surprise me, but after thinking it over, I shall accept it in the spirit of friendship. I do believe friendships can be made very quickly at times do you not agree? I too must apologise for my behaviour the other day. When you said that you had killed a man, that was just too big a shock to take in. Orcs are one thing, but to kill another human being! Well, as I said, it came as a big shock. I am sorry I left so abruptly, please forgive my rudeness. I hope very much that you will come to the Pony again and have another story for me.
Your faithful friend,
Lieve Averay
He wrote back very quickly, Lieve recieving his letter from Mr. Butterbur.
Greetings,
So nice to hear from you again, to be honest..it gave me hope for I received it when I was resting in Moria..hope here is a much needed thing. Anyway, I actually i agree with you..friendship can be sparked rather quickly. I am sorry that what i have done has shocked you..I wont speak of it again. But all i can say is that when i have to kill men i always make sure that they are evil men and those are no better than orcs. Well if i ever meet you parents im going to tell them of how nice a daughter they have brought up! If your parents dissaprove of you going to the pony..well..its all fine as long as you dont get caught! Also..since your parents disapprove of you going to the pony..what will they think when you meet and talk to an elf! I'm actually looking forward to that..I think you will like her. Anyhow I best end this letter here before I start to ramble amongst other things.
Captain ---
P.S let me know when you would next wish to meet if you wouldn't mind
