"A pint of milk for every pint of beer"

in

This scrap of paper can be found under an empty vase, on the mantle piece in Skelcar's office. The ink has ran a little bit, presumably from damp.

Today I attended a party. It was a rather dull one, despite being around people I was fond of. I felt obliged to stick around with one particular friend to make sure they got home safely. I grew too tired and impatient.

I found myself with an obscure desire for milk. I think when I got home, I had a pint of milk for every pint of beer. The craving seemed sensible- it helped a lot. There's something about milk- and I refer to cow's milk- I think it's the refreshment of water but having the substance of a filling dessert.

I'm not attending next week, sir.
