The battle of Fornost - part VI

"On the evening of the third day after we were sent forward as a scouting party, we first met our enemy. The scouts that I sent forth to watch the road ahead, came back to us in a hurry. As did the scouts on our flanks. All six brought ill news with them. 'Hîr Naegilrond! Enemy movement sighted, ahead of us!' The other scouts reported the same, but then concerning our flanks. 'How many have they brought to face us?' I asked in a cool voice. Already my mind was thinking of the possibilities to fight or escape the enemy if necessary. 'More than three hundred, my lord. Possibly even four hundred.' was the answer of the human scout. We all looked up at the man, and those that didn't, froze on the spot. One of my veterans broke the silence as first, saying: 'That is not a scouting party anymore...' I nodded once. 'Indeed it is not, Aldoril..' "

"Immediately, I pointed at four of the scouts. 'You four, take ten of my warriors and head back to our army as quick as you can. Stop for no thing. Travel fast, and make sure at least one of you reaches hîr Círdan. You must, mellon nín.' He simply pressed his hand against his heart and bowed his head to me in acknowledgement, and went after those I sent back. Now it was up to us..."

" 'We shall make our stand here, mellyn!' I spoke. We could easily form a protective circle and use the trees as extra cover as well. There was no need to shout out orders. My warriors were veterans, one by one. Quickly and determined, we linked our shields together into that protective circle, while the scouts took out their famous longbows to support us. 'We need to draw their attention! Arodlach, Alphalor, blow your horn!' Four hundred enemies we could certainly win from, we knew that, but it would still prove to be a hard fight. The next moment, the call of our elvish horns sounded through the forest and valley. A call that was immediately answered by hostile horns. They knew we were here..."
