Of Elves and Men

The greatest love story ever known is the tale of Luthien Tinuviel and Beren. There is no elf maid alive in Middle-Earth, who can rival her beauty. I have seen the daughter of Elrond, but then again I have also gazed upon Luthien in the living flesh many years ago when I could still be considered young among our people. No words can adequately describe how beautiful she was. I was envious of her. Standing in her presence I was a stone, rough around the edges, next to the most immaculate diamond. Still, despite her otherworldly perfection, she chose a Man when she could have the heart of any Elf-prince she desired. She chose Beren.

This is something I could never quite wrap my mind around. The Unions between Elves and Men. There have been other such instances in our histories. I can recall the daughter of that proud Noldo-king, who wed Tuor. Tuor was no ordinary man, however. There are rumours that the line of Dol Amroth was began by Imrazor and the handmaid of Nimrodel. Finduilas, Orodreth's daughter, fell in love with Turin, but in the end it brought her only tragedy. None could escape the evil that man brought while he was shadowed beneath his curse, though. And there was that Manling woman, who we called Saelind, that loved Aegnor.

It is said that Elves who love Men have strange fates and I would be inclined to agree with that statement.
