Under Midgewater - Prologue

It felt their arrogant steps long before they came into view of the mouth of the cave, dark and low, blending into the uncertain terrain of the Midgewater Marsh. It felt their approach silently, curious as to their goals and already angered by their attitude. The pair did not think to be concerned that their passage through the Midgewater Marshes had been unmolested by any of the local goblin tribes. The Goblins and other beasts all knew well to stay well away from the cave and the secret paths that led to it, unless summoned.

The corpse of a Black Numenorean lieutenant laid at her feet. Blood puddled around her, on the cold steel floor of the infirmary. Walking in for a regular inspection, she had overheard one guard speaking in disgust over her half-Nurnhoth heritage. That simply could not stand. She did not let it stand. She grinned, fire in her eyes as she looked upon to the other soldiers in the room.

A head injury and a week in bed.  This was not the Lady's moment of reckoning! Earlier in the day her symptoms grew worse, it was like a hangover, but without alcohol. She couldn't remember how she received the nasty blow to her head and names started to fade out of memory.  A visit to a doctor was in order and she was found in the care of the most unlikely company.  Perhaps she was living true to a particular stereotype? A classic blonde?  Middle-Earth may never know.

[At last this log is written in again, in that firm, upright, and elegant hand.]

Entry the eighth.

Assistant's Log, 7: Thirsting Blades & Ravens

Entry the seventh — though a paltry one, for I only wish to quickly communicate my concerns about the treatment of Miss Rue.

I understand well your inclination to assume that Rue's troubles are all in the mind, horrors and fantasies planted by some Woman who addled her with herbs to compel her service. And I shall not contest the fact that Rue is disturbed, at times irrational, and is frequently antisocial in behavior.

Assistant's Log, 5: Arrow-Wound & Split Heads

[The hand that writes today is not as upright and elegant as it usually is. It is tired, a bit wobbly.]

Entry the fifth.

While I was smoking — or at least feigning a smoke — with friends at the Prancing Pony, a Woman arrived with an arrow-wound, apparently received during an encounter with a thug on the Bree-lands' roads. As there were a number of experienced healers present, I was needed only as an assistant, though I would like to flatter myself and say I was of a little bit of use.
