Background
River was the daughter of the well-known Bree merchant Wil Oaks. She was born into the upper class of Bree, and was well-educated. However, she did not enjoy this for long.
When River was 13, her father's business collapsed due to several unfortunate events, many of them involving brigands blocking roads. Her family was forced to live in Beggar's Alley, and her mother was soon kidnapped as punishment for a debt.
Wil Oaks fell into a state of depression, and his daughter was alone in her struggle for survival. She resorted to criminal acts such as theft and soon became adept at sneaking and moving around unseen. One day, she attempted to steal from a house, but was spotted by its owner.
The man who found her, a metalsmith by the name of Jon Leafcutter, did not turn her over to the Watch. Instead, he saw opportunity in the girl and her skills, and forced her to poison some of his competitors in Bree. Not wanting to spend time in jail, River did as she was asked. Eventually, her deeds became known and she was approached by a mysterious merchant, who paid her to kill her employer. Desperate for coin, River pushed Jon into a lake when he went fishing and drowned him. She continued to steal here and there, but she began performing more jobs for the merchant. Her life as an assassin has begun.
River began saving up with her new job in order to begin a normal life. Her father passed away when she was 17, a year before she earned enough coin to move out of Beggar's Alley. She started to take up trading like her father before her, but she realized that she could not simply throw away the past. Her then amateur trading skills and small business was not enough to sustain her, and she missed the thrill of the job. River went back to doing what she did best, while slowly building an honest life as well.
Knowing the dangers of her profession, she led a double life. Normally, she is River Oaks, a simple merchant. For her other job, she created the identity of Celoneth, meaning river-girl in Sindarin, a name which soon became known in the criminal underworld of Bree.
Celoneth tries her best to appear tough and intimidating, but somewhere deep down, the sorrowful girl exists still.
