Melowen is born twenty-five years ago in a farm of the Sutcrofts, the fertile farmland between Garsfeld and Snowbourn, from Harfed son of Gama and Theodwyn. She's the middle of three children, all working in the family farm as soon as they're old enough to hold a hoe in their hands.

The birth of the youngest sister, Ulcwyne, unfortunately signs the death of her mother Theodwyn; their father Harfed and the older brother Gleothain will raise the little girls alone. When Harfed passes away, Melowen is in her late teen years and Gleothain naturally becomes the head of the household.

He takes the responsability very seriously, but whilst Ulcwyne is quiet and meek, attending her duties diligently, Melowen's attitude is a pain in the side for her siblings both. Obstreperous, stubborn and with silly ideas like becoming a shieldmaiden of Rohan, her presence in the farm is more a nuisance than an actual help for the family.

Following the failure of her bethrotal with Dagfar, son of Eliswith, she decides to leave her home and land altogether and ride North, to live her adventures as a sellsword. Much scene ensues when she declares her intentions to her siblings, harsh words are thrown around, and eventually Melowen leaves during nighttime, to avoid further discussions.

In the last three years, she has riden North up to reach the Bree lands, where she met a group of fellow kinsmen, the Esquires of the Riddermark temporarily located in Bree. There she stops, homesickness combined with the news from the South making her more and more eager to return home to help.

It takes her almost a whole year to find her way back home, after several failed attempts and the loss of friends she grew attached to. It is south of the Wold that she meets and joins the Riders of the Riddermark, with whom she'll ride the final leagues that lead to her lands.
