Othraine was born in TA 2778, the same year as the current thane of the Firebeard clan. The two grew up together and became friends and battle brothers in the old thane's shield wall, fighting together as young warriors in the Battle of Azanulbizar at the climax of the War of Dwarves and Orcs. When his friend was named the next thane, Othraine was gifted the title of commander of the shield guard, elite bodyguard of the clan chief. Othraine served in this post for many years, watching with pride as his eldest son Uthraine joined the company, and became known as a shrewd tactician in the battles the clan waged against goblin and orcish raiding parties. With the approach of his twilight years, Othraine leapt into the thick of the fighting less and less and when he was seriously injured by a poisoned arrow a few years ago he stepped down as commander of the shield guard and assumed the role of advisor to his dear friend and clan thane. Much of his time is now split between the clan mansion and his ambassador's quarters in Thorin's Hall as he carries out diplomatic duties on behalf of his thane, employing cunning learned on the battlefield during trade negotiations.
