A Disturbing Night

A Disturbing Night

Khalis stirred with a jolt from his restful state his senses reaching out into the darkness that encompassed his sleeping chamber in Imladris. Instinctively his hand reached out for the white bladed elven knife which lay on his side table, as it settled familiarly into his grip the blade gave off its usual feint glow which reassured him. The blade was the oldest possession Khalis owned, he was told it was found with him when he was brought to Imladris by Tiril one of the border warders after he was discovered as a very small child near the borderlands. His mind was racing trying to hold onto the imagery he had seen in his dream, it was the same dream he always had that of a screaming woman and a shadowy form always just out of sight. But this time there were more screams all from the west. What did all this mean he asked himself?

Lighting a lamp he swung his legs out of bed, opened his journal and enscribed what he could remember of his dream into the first blank page he came to. Slowly he was adding more detail, more form to this nightmare but still many answers remained unanswered. Donning his leather trousers and pulling a cotton shirt over his sweat dampened form he took up his mallorn flute and headed out into the night. As he left the Homely House his eyes adjusted to the light being scattered from the heavenly bodies and he could soon see almost as well as day. He legs bore him swiftly westward across the valley out the northern gates and up the valley towards the mountains. The guards saw Khalis one of their captains as he jogged past them but they could tell by his gait that he would not stop to exchange their usual banter. Soon he reached the end of his trail where the green grass gave way to the first signs of snow. He climbed atop a series of large rocks until he reached the top flat platform where he sat down and settled into place. The familiar sounds of the mountains reached out to his senses and he welcome the feel of the winds upon his skin and its music to his ears. Looking up into the starry night sky he took up his flute and began to form his own song a lament to the Valar as he felt the sadness swell within him.

Those that patrolled the outer northern reaches next morning would swear over breakfast that they heard the winds and the stars singing to one another.

(The start of a personal storyline for Khalis)
