Return to Isengard, Part 5

~Eregiel's Dream~

'Despite all warnings we have ridden to Isengard, nésa,' said Calentauriel. 'For what purpose?'

'Closure, nésa,' Eregiel answered. 'I want to see for myself that Isengard is truly overthrown. Thenafter shall my mind find peace.'

'You will receive no argument from me, nésa,' her sister replied.

The sisters rode north through Nan Curunír on the old road to Isengard. Debris was strewn about. Then they espied a disheveled group of Men on the road ahead. 'Dunlendings! Could it be Brogi?' Eregiel thought to herself.

~Nan Curunír~

'Yes, it is Brogi and a few members of his warband that survived the tumult caused by the Enyd,' she thought. 'The haughtiness in their eyes has been replaced by fear.'

~Isengard~

Eregiel then found herself and Calentauriel inside the Ring of Isengard. It was as Éomer described it.

Calentauriel remarked, 'Bregalad and the Enyd did this?'

Eregiel responded, 'You sound surprised, nésa.'

'I suppose I am a little,' Calentariel said.

'Even after you saw what he did to that iron grate on the culvert?' Eregiel asked.

Calentauriel demurred, 'Now that you put it that way...' The two sisters laughed.

'How serene it seems after the din made by Curunír's machinery!' exclaimed Eregiel.

'It is lovely, is it not?' asked Calentauriel.

'Strangely, it is,' Eregiel agreed.

~Orthanc~

The sisters then found themselves on the east side of Orthanc. Several indiduals stood on the steps. Mithrandir and Elessar were there as well as Théoden and Éomer, and Elessar's companions Legolas of the Woodland Realm and Gimli the Dwarf. At the foot of the steps were the halflings Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. Some of Théoden's riders were nearby. Another figure came into view. It was Curunír standing on a balcony of Orthanc high above the others.

Curunír spoke to members of the company in words that Eregiel could not discern. His voice was alternately pleasant and harsh. Lastly he spoke with Mithrandir in fierce debate. Curunír grew weary of the debate, or perhaps he did not like what Mithrandir had to say. He turned to go but Mithrandir called him back.

'I did not give you leave to go,' Mithrandir told him. Mithrandir spoke again but Eregiel could not make out the words. Then Mithrandir said, 'Behold, I am not Gandalf the Grey, whom you bretrayed. I am Gandalf the White who has returned from death. You have no colour now, and I cast your from the order and from the Council.' Mithrandir then raised his hand and said, 'Saruman, your staff is broken!' Curunír's staff shattered in his hands, shards flew here and there. Finally, Mithrandir commanded Curunír, 'Go!'(1)

Suddenly Eregiel's dream was over. Her sister Calentauriel was sitting nearby staring at her.

'Nésa, are you all right?' Calentauriel asked.

'Yes,' replied Eregiel, 'I think so. Why do you ask?'

'You were speaking in your sleep, often loudly,' Calentauriel informed her.

'Was I? I suppose I should not be surprised,' Eregiel said.

'Why is that, nésa?' asked Calentauriel.

'I had a remarkable dream. You and I were at Isengard,' replied Eregiel.

'We were? You must tell me about it!' Calentauriel exclaimed.
