"Chives are grown for their leaves which provide a mild flavour for many dishes"
Today, I went working in my little garden in the back yard of my hobbit hole.
I truly enjoy gardening, not as much as foraging in the woods but still! Is there a hobbit who doesn't like gardening?
There is a say, "food tastes better when prepared by yourself". True, and even better if the food comes from your own efforts to grow it! So as I was saying, working in the garden I noticed how green and healthy my chives have become. I adore chives! Aromatic herbs have a special corner all for them, that I tend with extreme care.
I decided to grab a clump and whisk something up, quick and easy. Perhaps... oh, scrambled eggs? I went to check the pantry and I had:
12 eggs from Sandon's farm (why use just a couple when you can use a dozen?)
2 tablespoons of fresh water from the well
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2/3 cup finely chopped sweet onion from Michel Delving's farmland
2 tablespoons butter
4 ounces of fresh goat cheese from Farmer Maggot, crumbled
3 tablespoons of minced chives
Perfect! In a large bowl, I whisked the eggs, water, salt and pepper all in one go! Then I set them aside.
Of course I had to waste time rummaging in my cupboard looking for my trusty cast-iron skillet. Of course eggs cook best when sizzled in a sturdy pan!
In the skillet, I sautéed the onion in butter until tender, then added the eggs and mixture, cooked and stirred until almost set.
It was then the turn of cheese and chives, once again stir, stir and stir until the eggs are set.
°°°
Let me tell you, sometimes, the simplest dishes give the most satisfaction. The chive leaves provide a mild flavour for many dishes, including this one.
And now that I've filled my belly, it is time to resume my gardening before it is supper time. Perhaps I should have used two dozen eggs and have some leftovers for later...
