I am now back from a journey which took me all the way to the Cape of Belfalas in the western region of Gondor. It was somewhat unplanned - and started at a Housing Office in Bree. They have representatives there from all over the world, each one keen to promote the various regions and the benefits of living in them compared to anywhere else.
I already have a perfectly pleasant house in the Shire, but the representative from Gondor assured me that there was no obligation to buy another house - indeed, I discovered very quickly that Gondorian homes are a considerable way above my modest financial situation! But, with a safe passage to the region guaranteed, I decided to pay a visit anyhow, just for the chance to explore somewhere new.
The Cape of Belfalas is situated on the southernmost tip of the coast of Gondor - and you are immediately struck by the sights and sounds of the sea. I could easily spend hours simply standing and observing the ocean; the gentle waves lapping along stretches of beach, the grand ships steadily sailing to and fro, no doubt going about trade or some other vital business. Should one wish it, there are smaller vessels available to take you on an excursion to one of the nearby islands. Gulls fly overhead, and as the sun sets, the sky looks so beautiful that I wished for some paint or ink to try and capture the moment on a page.
Those who reside in this area are truly fortunate to be in such a location. The local people that I met certainly made me feel welcome - even entrusting me with tasks as a means of learning my way around. I sampled some of the local fish, explored the Emyn Ernil forest and visited a lighthouse that helps direct the ships safely along the coast. I was also allowed to look inside one of the empty houses in the region and get a taste of the sumptuous luxury enjoyed by local residents.
I was not able to visit the smaller type of local housing, although I presume that is due to the representative only wanting me to learn about the most impressive ones. If the rest of this region is anything to go by, I dare say that even the most "modest" of Gondorian houses would feel palatial compared to my cosy Shire home.
Eventually, I had to start making my way home. I will admit I was somewhat unwilling to leave such a picturesque coastal location. We Elves love places of great beauty - and the Cape of Belfalas is certainly one of those.
I sincerely hope I can visit again in future.
