6. Shimmering Scales

Fearelhil worked away at a forge in the Bree-town crafting hall. He should pester the smiths in Millshaw about borrowing their forges perhaps. A golden haired dwarf approached him from behind, loudly clearing his throat, "Master Copperspire. I have... something you need to see." Fearelhil sighed and put his things aside, moving towards the dwarf, "Good day, Master Tubok. Have you found something-- ah.."

Tubok does not reply, but he hands the elf something wrapped in cloth with a worried look. "I think you and Lady Arrygg need to see this." Fearelhil frowns, not liking his usually jovial friend so serious. He unwrapped the cloth and paled, "Tell me, Master Tubok... Where did you find this."

Tubok folded his arms over his chest, still in his traveling clothes, "The Blue Mountains. I would have grabbed more, but the snow was shifting and I feared an avalanche... or worse."

Fearelhil struggled to remain calm and collected. Very few things disturbed or scared him, but this one thing did. He sets the objects with a soft clatter onto his anvil, bracing his arms on the cold steel, gulping for breath. He struggled back the horrors of the images of Dale and Erebor, of which he witnessed, and the dragons of ages before flooded his mind, their destruction still freshly burned in his mind.

Tubok thrust a flask of whiskey under Fearelhil's nose. He grabbed it and threw back a hearty gulp. He shuddered and handed it back. He murmurs, "Tis a scale off its back." Tubok furrows a brow, "You are old enough I ain't questioning you, Master Copperspire."

Fearelhil grabbed a rather heavy steel hammer and swung it above his head and down with all his might onto the scale. The head of the hammer flew off narrowly missing Tubok. The dwarf swore violently and leapt out of the way.

The smiths all around them all stopped to stare. Those hammers were not easily broken. Copperspire snatched up the scale and looked it over. The shimmery, silver-white scale was unmarred. He quickly wrapped them back up in the cloth, saying out loud, "Faulty hammer, it was not firmly attached." He abandoned his work and grabbed Tubok's arm, frantically dragging him out to avoid anyone panicking, for if an elf is panicking, that is a cause for concern.

"We need to find the others."
