A Letter From A Beard!

Maurr son of Bóurr to Miss Taite Rushwood greeting!

From far over the Misty Mountains cold this letter travels to you. I pen it in the Vales of Anduin, where ‘neath the mist the earth bursts green with grass and scarlet, pink, and gold with flowers, but by the time you read it I will be home at the Lonely Mountain, in the hall of my father.

I hope you have not forgotten my beard, for I have not forgotten your metaphorical one! If you write East I hope it is to say that you are well and Master T. is proving himself an attentive and reliable gentleman.

I hope the other Master T(umunir) is also behaving. Arlis hopes he does not get himself into any trouble; in not so many months we will return and know if he has been naughty.

Do you have a favorite stone? Our pockets we will be filling with trinkets to bring back west.

I am honored to remain,
Yours deeply,
Maurr

Erebor, the Lonely Mountain

My Most Dearest Master Maurr,

I am so terribly happy to have gotten your letter! You're on the other side of the world right now, and that thought is thrilling and sad to me. Have I forgotten your beard? As if! I will never, ever forget the kindest, warmest dwarf who ever walked this green earth. I could never put into words how much I miss you (and your beard!). I trust you're keeping it properly braided?

You wrote such a lovely talk about the Vales and how beautiful it is. I don't know much about it, except that that is where my old friend Hultroth were from. I still miss him so.

Master Tarvarthal is truly the most attentive and reliable of gentlemen! He works from sunup to sundown and asks nothing for himself, but is always looking to help where he may. I don't think you will be shocked to hear that my feelings towards him have warmed and become something quite sweet and delightful. I imagine you smiling when you read this. I hope you do.

Master Tumunir has been a little scarce for the first part of the summer, but then, I have been busy as a bee myself with tending the house and running to Bree for shopping and errands now that the weather is agreeable. But there's been no trouble, at least that I've heard! I'll brook no trouble for my dear old dwarf, believe me on that!

A favorite stone! Oh, Master Maurr, you dare not bring me back any gifts or treasures! You'll make me cry just thinking about a kindness of that sort. But if you was to insist, I would say I am fond of blue, or green, or things that are bright and shining, like snow and ice and the surface of water.

I will be watching the front-gate the moment the air turns cool and the leaves show any color. You said you would return in the fall and I know you will keep your word, as there were never a truer or more honorable dwarf in all the world. I hope Mister Doc is keeping well, and Master Bild, and anyone else with you. More than anything, keep yourself safe.

With much love,
Your friend forever,
Taite
