Letters and Love

Jackie! Catch!

A letter, folded, sealed and written in fine hand was unceremoniously thrown in her direction by Jack, narrowly missing his mother, who held a letter of her own and gave a scolding to her son

Don't be throwing things at the girl! Not in her condition!

Condition?! Not like she's got a bun in her oven! Just a bit of a cough, right Jackie? Besides if she keeps company with folk like him, her oven'll go out!

Mrs Denton gave the lad a severe look and proceeded to read. Jackie in turn also, breaking the seal upon the letter, though taking a while longer to work her way through the fine writing within.

That's lovely that is, he were always a good lad, always thought he were. I'll miss working with him.

Jack gave his mother a look as if she had finally gone completely and utterly mad

The healer?! You were cursing his name and now he be good?

No! Not him! The dwarf lad!  Breaks my heart to tell him I wont be working elsewhere, I mean, I have duties proper now! I know, I will bake him and the other dwarf a nice steak and ale pie, fine folk they be, fine folk. Maybe a pie each, they have big appetites!

Upon hearing this, Jackie, who continued to read, raised a hand as if to say "Me too". Eventually she made it to the end of the letter though, a smile set firm upon her lips.Jack noticed.

Jackie? Who sent it? Don't be getting letters from lads, not till I've had me chance!

He grinned and tried to get a look at the letter, the girl holding it out of his reach though the stretch forcing a cough out of her, still she recovered quickly and after a sip of warm tea.

Strawberries, he remembered!  We'll need another chair at the table, and plenty to eat too. Though not sure Pa will be too happy.

At hearing this her mother came over, ready to burn the letter in the fire as she got the wrong end of the stick, yet after her cursory look at its contents, she handed the letter back with a..

There will be beer enough for your Pa still, don't worry. Another chair it is.
