Selling ice in Waymeet
When a young Dwarf wants to make a name for himself plying the trade routes of Eriador, he needs a cargo to start his travels with. The first cargo is sold to get the coin to buy the second, and the second pays for the third, and so on, with each one leaving a bit of profit, but how to buy the first? My solution was ice: in plentiful supply in the frozen lakes of the Blue Mountains for anyone with an axe, a saw, and some time. Load the biggest blocks you can cut onto your waggon, cover them in straw and hides, and ride south to the Shire. Half the weight of the ice will have melted, maybe more, before you reach the markets in Waymeet. But that still leaves quite large blocks of ice that Hobbits will eagerly purchase to put in their root cellars, for little matters more to a Hobbit than keeping his food fresh and in good supply year round. There isn't much the Hobbits need that the Shire can't produce, save ice.
