The Quest Goes On

After summarizing all that had happened from the time he received the stone to the current time, the young watchman found himself making a decision. A rather important decision. You see... the elf, Edhelfaron, had offered him two choices. To actually journey with him BACK towards the Barrows, or wherever Calagand and the others would be, to meet them… or to stay in Bree and finally get away from all this elvish business, and try to forget all that had happened. Immediately, Agromnir agreed to the latter as it was obviously the thing to… choose? No…

A few moments after Edhelfaron left through the door I had to stop and really think about this. No, what was I doing? This elf had just healed me of a great pain and sickness, and was I really going to just leave my captain when I was fully able to aid him? He needed help. Edhelfaron needed help. Calagand said that they would need all the aid they could get and to not assist them when I was capable was rather cowardly. Edhelfaron might have saved my life… and I had to repay him. Indeed, this quest was a very serious and important one.

I stood up straight and turned my eyes from the ground to the door. Then before I knew it I was outside, trying to catch up to Edhelfaron with all my speed. “Wait. Wait!” I said with a new found strength within me, “I’m coming!!”

Edhelfaron was already somewhat far away from the house as he was in great haste, but he stopped and turned around after he heard a familiar voice a good ways behind him.

After a few moments of running, I found the elf in my sights. “I have changed my mind…” I said with a loud voice, breathing a little heavily, “I’ve decided to come and help you.”

The elf just looked at me for a moment with his narrow eyes. Then he gave a small smile and nodded, “Excellent,” he said, “Meet me at the west gate as soon as you can after you have packed a few things. Make haste!”

I made it to the west gate and cast my eyes around me in search for the elf. I spotted a figure further down the road outside of Bree and strolled towards it while leading my horse until it was clear to me that it was Edhelfaron. I walked the rest of the way and found the elf with closed eyes as I reached him. “I’m here… what are you doing?” I said.

Edhelfaron revealed his eyes slowly and then started casting them sharply around the ground.

I just stood there with a confused expression, “Looking for something?”

The elf did not respond just yet and continued searching the ground as he walked forward a little ways, then left, and then right with his narrow, light blue eyes always on the ground. Finally, he peered up at me and looked as though he’d just realized I was there. “Ah yes…

            I cocked a brow.

The elf paused a moment before looking to the north and speaking again, “From what I can see, Calagand and another ride north…and someone else may be intentionally following them. Someone dangerous.”

“What? Who? There were two others journeying with Cal…”

“Yes, but enough questions for now. We ride north to the town of Trestlebridge,” Edhelfaron said sharply as he quickly mounted his steed that was nearby.

“Trestlebridge?” I asked as I climbed onto my own horse as quick as I could.

Edhelfaron said nothing more and started on his way.

Trestlebridge? I thought as I followed the elf. My family is there. Should I visit them?

Eventually, we made it to the partly destroyed town and I decided that visiting my family would only delay us. And so I rented a small room in the inn and got some rest as Edhelfaron continued on. He told me to meet him at a place called Mincham’s camp, which was just further down the north road. After some rest, I bought a couple more provisions and headed there on my horse. Once there, I met with Edhelfaron again and after telling me of this follower (who was apparently following Calagand) and the way Cal had gone, we continued on. Through the Fields of Fornost.. it was called. The elf told me to be wary as we traveled through this place, for it was much like the Barrow-downs, full of troubled and restless spirits that could come upon you anytime. Edhelfaron said that we should be safe enough, because of his mere presence. I wondered how many lands in Middle-earth were like this place…

At long last, we made it past the fog that surrounded the fields and found ourselves climbing a slope towards a small camp with a ranger by the fire. We told the man who we were and what we were doing there. He said he had seen and met the people we were searching for, (though there were three instead of two) and that they had continued west in their own search for the Cargul. Edhelfaron and the ranger, whose name was Torogethir, continued exchanging words until they turned their heads in the direction of a man who was walking towards us, a little ways off. He was coming from the entrance of the fields. I turned around to see who they were looking at and squinted my eyes as he came closer and closer.

“Who goes there?” Edhelfaron asked with a loud enough voice.

The man stopped after a few more steps and looked at the three of us by the small fire, “Hullo there…I’m a friend,” he said with a slightly deep and gruff voice.

I narrowed my eyes further and the next second, it was confirmed to me. No…it can't be, I thought to myself. All the way out here? The eavesdropper?! I stared at him and he stared at me. “Kaiell?”

The bearded man paused for a moment and cocked a brow, “Agromnir?”
