The day passed as any other. When the morning chores were done he stepped inside to enjoy a midday meal and after that, he finished the rest of what was needed to do to make sure that all was as it should be.
It was already dark when he stepped inside his home again, having taken time to watch the sunset and its wonderful colors. At least the shortened day allowed such a sight to be enjoyed sooner and it reminded him that it wasn't long until the days would begin to grow longer again.
He had no meal prepared to grab with ease to sate himself for the evening, leaving him with little choice but to make something. He went into the kitchen to see what he had at hand.
In a bowl, he broke down the loaf of bread that had gone stale, afterward adding some hot water to it. By hand, he rolled the bread around in the bowl then set it aside so that the bread could soak up the water. Meanwhile, in a separate bowl, he tossed in a handful of currants adding onto it some ground ginger, freshly ground nutmeg, two pinches of salt, half a gill of sack and lastly unwrapping his cone of sugar and clipping a few chunks on top of it and all mixed well.
He carefully kneaded the bread together, the texture felt like dough. It was perfect. The mix was tossed in and he kneaded it all together again until all was well combined. When it all was good and done he buttered up the pie pan and dumped it all in, spreading the mix evenly out until he was happy with the sight of it. Some small chunks of butter were added to the top and it was ready to be put into the oven. It still had some heat from before and he remembered his grandmother saying this didn't need such a high heat to bake.
The food was in the oven and he had cleaned his hands now it was just a matter of waiting. To pass the time he grabbed a book from the shelf and as he was sitting down he could hear Hunter and Mist start barking outside, something they only did when someone was approaching or a predator was coming too close. He set the book down on the chair and stepped to the window to peer outside and to his surprise there was indeed someone walking down the road. Who was it?
