A Battered Notebook: 24-26 Lithe

24 Lithe Sterday:

Had another sleepless night. Restless and waking too early, this is taking it's toll. I would not be so irritated if the dreams were of something worth being shamed about. If it was a true horror, but it is nothing that was not done in duty and nightmares of things that never came to pass. I'm afraid it's affecting my temper at work and with my family. I had it out with Piperel again about the man she's seeing.  I had avoided her after she brought up the girl. As if I needed to be reminded of her? It's not about me and my mistakes anyway, it's about her. And the big one she's currently making. I've poked around about this Gorlen, he's a charmer as I suspected but I know there are other secrets but he's got as many friends as he does enemies and they are tight lipped and a dangerous lot.

25 Lithe Sunday:

Nightmare woke me up, trapped in that damn room again with the enemy pouring through the only door. I'm done with this. I can't sleep. Going for a walk.

26 Lithe Monday:

This has been the longest day I've had in quite awhile. It started out early, with a notice of a man causing a ruckus in the Pony. Of course. Nothing unusual there. All the Watchers were off on patrol so it fell to me. I went and saw the perpetrator. A large man, two hands higher than I and full of war paint and crude furs. He had an axe and it took some doing subduing him, I sustained a wound to my thigh but after Brigwald (excuse me, Captain Brigwald) showed up with Crom we were able to take him into custody. There were a couple of regulars who tried to 'help', as always involving themselves with Watcher matters. I find it tough adjusting to working within the strict hierarchy of the town guard once more. Outside the hedge, it was less formal, more about intelligence gathering and eliminating brigands. We did not salute each other or speak titles, because the enemy could be watching. Brigwald got upset because I didn't call him Captain, even though I called him Second Watcher. What a cunt.
The wound is bothering me, the healer was not in town and it pains me more than I'd like to admit. I took a walk to inform Barliman that the suspect was in custody, he'll sleep off the booze and Brig will figure out the punishment later.
A strange turn of events however, a note was delivered to me showing a drawing of my likeness and that of the artist. A rather attractive young woman with red hair and freckles who does not speak a word. I saw her there and after dealing with a disgruntled dwarf accusing, of all people Gorlen, of theft, we went to the back and spoke. Or rather I spoke and she wrote. There are pages before this one full of writing and a drawing of myself that is certainly not in my hand. Strange, to see myself smiling up from the page. It's been awhile since I smiled much about anything. I had to leave to get back and work on this endless stack of arrest reports.
Tosie seems a rather sweet girl who wants company, I don't feel as if I'd be good company as I am right now but she seemed entertained and did not want to let me go. She kissed my cheek on the way out, it was rather sweet.
