The Private Journal of Piperel Fenflower: 8-9 Lithe

Lithe ~

8 Lithe ~ Nothing much to do today, no one needed mending or rather did not want to pay for it done. I wandered around the market, browsing and I suppose it lucky there was naught that struck my fancy. Bought some cabbage and potatoes and have a few coppers left. It's a good thing I have a fair hand at cooking and don't eat much, food has become more expensive. There are times I miss the farm where I could get fresh milk and whatever I could pull from the ground to eat without batting an eye. I miss Mother making breakfast, she never burned the toast. If things get much thinner, I might be tempted to stop by for a big Highday dinner. On second thought, that would require me to have to face everyone and they'd know I'm struggling. I don't even want to talk to Corrben about it, even though he's always known my head better than I. Better to eat cabbages.

9 Lithe ~ I was wandering down near the South Gate and saw the smith, O., working on a rather beautiful scabbard for a long sword. I took a closer look, he was obliged to show me the fine work he had done. Bronze and silver scroll work and it was going to be set with a red gem the size of a pigeon's egg that the person who commissioned the scabbard had brought him. It was garnet that truly caught my eye. O. trusted me enough to let me hold it and the way the light caught in the deep crimson nearly took my breath away. I've always had an eye for pretty, shiny things and the fire within the stone made me wish to take it but of course, I'd not do such a thing. Even if no one was looking, I would probably never make it out of Bree and no matter how pretty, I can't live off of one gem. Ah well, it was nice to look at and I plan to see the finished product before O. turns it over to the owner. I wish I could create something so beautiful and though O. was willing to explain it all to me I was a bit overwhelmed and my attention drifted when he spoke of welding and fusing metals. I bid him farewell and went home, took a bath and washed my 'good' dress. I think I might go out tonight, it's Highday and I never went back to the farm for dinner. I ate some roasted potatoes and I've got enough coppers for a decent ale at the Pony. There's nothing much else to do and I'm not tired enough for sleep yet. Besides, who knows who might be around there tonight.
