The Ballad of Old Jacob

Old Jacob makes his way
To the Three Farthing Stone
Strolling down the Stock Road
So old and so alone
There he stops and stares
As tears fill his eys
Looking back so sadly
A life that passed him by
"Where did it all go wrong?", he cried
"No hobbit lass is at my side"

As a lad he first came
To the Three Farthing Stone
On his way to market
To sell veg he had grown
And there he saw a lass
With flowers in her hair
She danced around the stone
She did not have a care
"Come now and dance with me", said she
"This summer day you should be free"

Each day they used to meet
At the Three Farthing Stone
Sitting on the wood bench
Their little hobbit throne
They held each other's hands
And stared up at the sky
They spent those happy day
Watching white clouds float by
"Like clouds, let us be free", said she
"Why don't you run away with me!"

And so they both agreed
To meet again next day
At the Three Farthing Stone
Where they would run away
As the sun set slowly
They both waved their goodbye
Strolling to their burrows
To get all their supplies
"I am a happy lad", sang he
"A brand new life awaits for me"

Now on the path back home
Young Jacob spied an Inn
Being full of cheer
He thought he would go in
But he stayed there too long
And one drink became two
And before he knew it
The night was almost through
"Oh no, I've stayed too long", he said
"I must get quickly to my bed"

It was a tired hobbit
Who fell into his bed
And he awoke late morning
With such an aching head
It was not 'til midday
That he did reach the Stone
And to his distress
He stood their all alone
"What a fool I am", said he
"She has run away without me"

So many years did pass
And he turned old and grey
He always lamented
That he was late that day
One day he decided
On legs so old and sore
To the Three Farthing Stone
He would travel once more
"To see the stone again", he sighed
"And dream of happy days gone by"

Whilst he was at the Stone
An old lass did appear
With flowers in her hair
But eyes full up with tears
Though her face was wrinkled
Her eyes gave off a glow
It was the hobbits lass
From all those years ago!
"I can't believe it's you", she cried
"Neither can I", Jacob replied!

The hobbit lass recounted
What happened on that day
She'd met a friend from Stock
As she had made her way
They'd both gone to an Inn
And had too much to drink
And when she got home late
Her Pa kicked up a stink
"He locked me in my room", she cried
"All next day I was locked inside"

She had not reached the Stone
'Til sunset the next day
She had found it empty
Jacob had gone away!
And so like old Jacob
She had grown old alone
All of the time thinking
She'd lost him at the Stone
"I thought you'd forgot me", said she
"And would not come back to get me!"

Now they were re-united
They were both agreed
Although their days were short
They would get married
So that summer's evening
Under trees of green and red
At The Three Farthing Stone
The hobbits were then wed
"We'll spend our last days together"
"We will be happy forever!"
