Sept 26, 3018 TA (Chapter completed early morning)
Dwalter was unable to locate the stranger who (possibly) found his lost letter, but, as things turned out, the stranger located Dwalter first.
A message was passed on (apparently) by this stranger via Barliman Butterbur to seek out the hidden camp of the ranger, Lenglinn, just north of Buckland. Here, Dwalter was told he would find his lost letter.
Dwalter, not familiar with the area, first travelled to Adso's Camp and then struck out north-west, keeping the road to his left. Unfortunately, Dwalter travelled too far north and missed Lenglinn's camp. He ran into difficulty with some wild creatures (particularly a Brandy-hills swine) and was stunned into semi-unconsciousness before he was rescued by an elf from Rivendell.
The elf, Orillond, treated Dwalter with some medicine before taking him back to Adso's Camp, where Dwalter recovered enough before setting out again to Lenglinn's camp.
While resting, Dwalter, (after much initial reluctance), divulged enough of his story to the elf so that he could assist Dwalter in finding the Ranger, whom, as it turned out, already knew Orillond.
Orillond guided Dwalter to the camp, where Lenglinn confirmed that he indeed did have the letter (which had been passed on to him by the stranger), and thus, returned it to Dwalter.
Orillond and Dwalter then went their separate ways.
ADVENTURE TRANSCRIPT FOLLOWS:
Brandy-hills Swine threatens to attack!
Orillond hails Dwalter.
You faint dead away.
Orillond says, 'oh no'
Dwalter struggles to recover from the shock of his wounds and is struggling to stay conscious
Orillond looks to the strange dwarf and gives him some medicine
You say, 'Wha, Wha......'
Orillond says, 'master dwarf are you ok?'
Dwalter starts to rouse....very slowly
You say, 'Hrggmmm, hrggmmm ah..'
You say, 'What.'
Dwalter gets to his feet rather groggily
Orillond says, 'dont get up so quiqkly'
Orillond says, 'relax'
Dwalter looks around, trying to remember what happened
Orillond says, 'what happened to you?'
You say, 'What....the bears, or a boar, whatever those infernal creatures were'
Dwalter hasn't really noticed the elf standing over him yet
Dwalter shakes his head to get his bearings
Orillond sees the dwarf being panicked
Dwalter notices the elf for the first time
You say, 'What is this.....'
You say, 'An elf?'
Orillond says, 'no time to explain we got to get out of here'
Dwalter looks at the dead bear before him
Dwalter shakes his head, trying to work out why an elf would help him
You say, 'Ummm.'
Orillond wonders if he understood
You say, 'I am thankful master elf, but I am surprised why one of your kind would bother helping a dwarf?'
Orillond says, 'sometimes you must help even a dwarf in a bad condition'
You say, 'However, that doesn't mean I am not thankful...'
You bow deeply before Orillond.
Orillond says, 'no need for that'
You say, 'It is just my way of showing my gratitude'
Orillond says, 'ummm...thank you i guess'
You say, 'I am Dwalter, son of Dwailil, at your service'
Orillond says, 'my name is Orillond of Rivendell'
You say, 'Perhaps we should get away from this place to safer grounds'
Orillond says, 'good idea'
Orillond says, 'this way'
You say, 'I am not familiar with this area.'
Orillond says, 'at least we got away'
You say, 'Ah the road, I wandered off it a while ago'
Orillond says, 'there is a camp nearby we could rest'
You say, 'I am actually trying to find somebody north of the road'
Orillond says, 'what is his name?'
You say, 'Is that Adso's Camp?'
Orillond says, 'that hobbit i know him come with me'
You say, 'Very well'
You say, 'I left the camp earlier trying to find this person'
Orillond says, 'not far now'
You say, 'Your medicine has worked wonders with me.'
You say, 'Ah, here we are'
Orillond says, 'rest now we are safe'
You sit with Orillond.
Orillond sits with Dwalter.
Orillond says, 'what were you doing in the brandy hills?'
You say, 'Yes, as I was saying before, I left here very early in the morning'
You say, 'I received an important message to look for somebody here. He likely has found something I have lost.....Something very important'
Orillond says, 'family heirloom?'
You say, 'No, a message from my king, Dain II Ironfoot of Erebor, my homeland'
You say, 'To the steward of Thorin's Hall, Dwalin, son of Fundin'
Orillond says, 'ah....Erebor'
You say, 'So where are you from, master elf?'
You say, 'Ah, I forget, you already told me earlier'
You say, 'Rivendell, that's it'
Orillond says, 'Yes my homeland'
You say, 'Must be the knock of the head that confounded beast gave me.'
Dwalter chuckles to himself
Orillond says, 'i haven't see it in a long time'
Orillond says, 'i miss it'
Orillond says, 'i made the mistake and chose the life of a wanderer.ishould have stayed there'
You say, 'We dwarves were away from our homeland for a time too, while that foul dragon, Smaug, may he be cursed in death forever, took it as his home'
Orillond says, 'our time in Middle Earth is fadind.Soon we will take the ships into the West'
You say, 'But I still have to find this character who possibly has this message....at least, I hope he has it.'
You say, 'If he does I will be thankful.'
Orillond says, 'i can help you in your quest'
You say, 'It is my own foolish fault it was lost in the first place'
You say, 'You can? How? The person I am looking for is a ranger, apparently.'
Orillond says, 'i know many of them.what is his name?'
You say, 'The one who set me on the path towards him said not to mention his name......'
You say, 'Only that I would find him to the north of the road, in the south-west of the Brandy Hills, north of Buckland.'
Orillond says, 'he was being cautious.many spies of the enemy roam free'
You say, 'In my wanderings this morning I found no sign of him or his camp.'
Orillond says, 'but what if you had two extra eyes?'
Dwalter considers this request.
You say, 'I was also told to come alone.... You say you know many rangers here?'
Orillond says, 'i do'
You say, 'How do I know you are not an enemy of whom I seek?'
You say, 'And that your rescue act of me may have something more behind it....'
Orillond says, 'it was not i assure you'
Dwalter gets to his feet, suddenly wary
You say, 'Hmmmm'
Dwalter paces up and down, thinking.
Orillond says, 'im sure that it is not easy for a dwarf to trust an elf'
Orillond says, 'even his saviour'
You say, 'Can you prove to me that you are not a foe of this unknown ranger?'
Orillond says, 'i can'
You say, 'Or any ranger, for that matter?'
Orillond says, 'trust me'
You say, 'How can you prove this thing, then?'
Orillond says, 'i will help you track him down and if he says im the enemy you can kill me afterwards'
Dwalter sit sits again, waiting for the elf's answer
Orillond says, 'what do you say?'
You say, 'I may be a champion of my king, but I was bested by those creatures earlier, where you were not. I think if I tried to kill you, I would be unsuccessful.'
Orillond looks very friendly towards the dwarf
Orillond smiles with a big smile
You say, 'And if this ranger confirms that you are the enemy I may well end up his enemy as well for disobeying a request.'
You say, 'Nonetheless.....'
Orillond says, 'it's true that our races don't trust each other but still the rangers are friends both to Elven-Folk and to you'
You say, 'If it turns out you are speaking the truth, I ask your pardon.'
Orillond says, 'very well'
You say, 'If you understood the matter that concerns me, you would understand my manner'
You say, 'Put it this way, do you have any idea of whom I may be looking for?'
Orillond says, 'yes i do'
You say, 'Then think on your answer carefully and then give IT to me, I pray.'
Orillond says, 'there is a ranger that was a few miles north of buckland.his name i think is Lenglinn'
Dwalter scratches his beard
You say, 'Does this ..... Lenglinn know you. Will he confirm it as such?'
Orillond says, 'i helped him in the past so yes he will'
Dwalter cheers
You cheer.
Orillond stands up slowly
You say, 'Then you have answered well, master elf. I will take you at your word. And you may take me to him.'
Orillond says, 'ok then Dwarf stay close'
You say, 'lead the way'
Orillond says, 'i see smoke.that must be Lenglinn's camp over there'
You say, 'Ah, I see it, to think that I was not too far from it in the first place'
Orillond says, 'go and ask him if he knows me'
You say, 'I shall'
Dwalter engages in discussion with Lenglinn
Orillond waits as he is sure that Lenglinn knows him well
Orillond begins to smoke.
Dwalter continues the discussion for a few minutes. Lenglinn indeed confirms the truth that Orillond speaks.
Dwalter listens as Lenglinn explains that Orillond will not risk giving him away, and as a result, will not come up here to speak.
Dwalter listens as Lenglinn explains to Dwalter that he will attach a message to an arrow and fire it at a particular location (in a tree) that Orillond will know, and retreive the message.
Dwalter watches Lenglinn writes the message, giving his heartfelt thanks on behalf of himself and Dwalter, for helping the dwarf find him.
Dwalter watches Lenglinn attach the message to the arrow and fire it into the trunk of a tree that Orillond should see without any trouble
Orillond reads the letter and mumbles to himself
Dwalter leaves Lenglinn and returns to Orillond's location, away from the camp.
You say, 'I will rest and then set off once more to Ered Luin, as what I lost has, fortunately, been returned to me'
You say, 'My message for the king, that is.'
Orillond says, 'very good.Safe journeys Master Dwarf'
You bow.
Orillond says, 'and watch yourself'
Orillond hails Dwalter.
You say, 'And you too, and I shall do.'
You say, 'Maybe we shall cross paths once more, one day.'
Orillond says, 'who knows.Perhaps we will'
Orillond says, 'until then goodbye'
You say, 'I will not forget your kind deed towards me, maybe Middle-Earth will also not forget it too (he adds with a slight grin)'
You say, 'Farewell'
Orillond says, 'Farewell'
Orillond cheers.
Orillond bows deeply before Dwalter.
You bow.
