Aemrics journal entry 2 - The attack on the Easterlings

The Wold - Undeep Watch

It has been three weeks after my arrival here. The eastern tribes grow bolder everyday, they pushed themselves over the Anduin and set a new camp on our side of the river. The commander had a messenger sent back to Harwick to request more men, they are planning an attack to push them back over the river. Two days later a group of well armed Rohirrim arrived from Harwick. They set up camp a little more west, making sure the enemy would not take notice. That evening everyone got ready and armed themselves, and orders were given to every captain.

I was asked to scout around the camp during the attack and make sure the enemy would not flank us. I strapped on my leather armor and bound a bag of eight javelins on my back. A bunch of daggers and my sword were tied around my belt. I climbed on my horse and took my position on the south flank of our camp. When night had fallen the archers group stood in a long line on a high ridge overlooking their eastern camp. They oiled their first load of arrows and set the tip aflame. The night was silent, when the arrows took flight. The arrows rained fire on their camp. Their tents started to burn, and shouts of panic could be heard soon after. Some of them were running out of the tent with their garment on fire. Another volley of fire arrows hit their camp, setting half of their camp in flame. I saw the enemy regrouping and taking arms while the Eorling archers continued their arrow rain.

The Easterlings have another camp to the far south that could send reinforcements, so I spurred my horse and went off south to secure the flanks. After a while I heard a thunder of hooves getting louder. I peered in the dark and saw shapes of horsemen heading my way, once I saw shapes of hooked swords I knew for sure. The Easterlings were running a massive cavalry attack from the south.

I rode back as fast as possible to warn the commander. In response, he quickly sent up a rank of archers to greet the easterling cavalry. The Rohirrim mounted up and formed a wedge rank not far beside the archer unit. Once in range of the archers, they released a volley of arrows. In the same time the Rohirrim gained speed to meet them head on. It was a large group of mounted Easterlings, almost twice the size of the Rohirrim group. The arrows hit target throwing some of the Easterlings off their horses. The ground was shaking as the Easterling cavalry drew dangerously close, battle cries were heard as the Rohirrim clashed into them. Both parties were at full speed as they clashed hard into each other, heavy casualties on both sides as a result.

The right flank of the Easterling cavalry was unchallenged and were storming past the Rohirrim to the archers. The commander shouted and one captain lighted a fire, the fire spread over the ground in a direct line in front of the archers. A wall of fire now separated the archers and their mounted attackers. The Easterling cavalry was wavering, the horses panicked by the sudden fire haze while the arrow volley kept killing them.  Some of the riders managed to jump through the fire. I rode to meet one of them. His clothes were on fire, but he headed to meet me in battle nonetheless. I spurred my horse to ride faster holding a javelin in my hand. I threw it and hit him in the chest throwing him off the saddle.

The battle raged on, and turned into our favor eventually. When dawn set in we had victory! The Easterling camp on our side of the river was utterly destroyed. The Easterling cavalry was beaten and what remained fled the field. Still, the Easterling camps on the otherside of the river are still swarming with hostile activity. But at least we made a stop to their advance and a blow to their morale.
