Introduction
Whilst the history of the Shire is not one that includes great conflicts or adventure, there are certainly figures who have left an impact on our land and culture. The tales of many can be heard through song or rhyme, but in this book I shall provide factual accounts (to the best of my ability) of these 'heroes' lives and what they did to earn them a place in lore and legend.
In each chapter, a different hobbit shall be accounted for. I write in chronological order, from the very beginning of the Shire to more recent times. The information provided here is sourced from the libraries of the Great Smials of Tuckborough and the Brandy Hall in Buckland as well as my own collection of books in Barleywick.
As will most historical records, certainty of fact is increased as one proceeds through time. In early chapters it may be noted that dates and confirmation of statements is somewhat lacking - for few records exist of such times.
Whilst this book is titled 'Heroes Among Hobbits', some of those who are written about may not be considered 'heroes' in a way that heroes are commonly perceived. However, in my view, they have all contributed something considerable to history that makes them worthy of being named heroes.
The first chapter begins on the next page.
