Of The Bow and the Blade - III

Thus the company had ventured into a cave...

The cave was home to many lesser dragon-spawn that have claimed residence within. The company had hewn their way through many of the thick-scaled creatures as they passed further into the cave. However it was soon when they had stumbled upon a the mother of the worm-spawn. She was much larger than any other that they had encountered that day and as they approached she was awoken and she charged upon the company, thus a fierce battle of man, dwarf and a great worm had taken place within those caves. Many of the company's men had fallen injured in the battle but if not for the valiance of one of a Gondorian man within the company whom hewed his axe into the neck of the beast- they all might have found themselves dead upon a failed quest.

Therwen had also fallen injured by the beast and Redwick sought to aid her, yet he knew not how to tend injuries and the aid of another member in the company was required. Once the company had tended to their wounded they slept within the worm's den where some have scavenged items of value from its horde, yet they had only taken what they would make use of.

That night Redwick had lied beside Therwen, for he was afraid for her and thought to protect her from anything that should come.

...But in his worry he had found little sleep that eve.

In the morning the company pressed on...

Over snow and ice they searched for their prize but it was nowhere to be found. The company had begun to believe that all was in vain and that never shall they find the prize which they long sought for. They took counsel amongst one another and agreed to press onwards and to continue their search, that day Redwick was advised by a member of the company to stay at Therwen's side. He had tried to do so but his thoughts lingered both upon the quest and Therwen, his mind was yet not at ease with the what he felt for her, for he himself had never had such feelings ere he had met her. Thus his witts were only half with him.

As the company pressed on they climbed a slope upon a mountain side and once they had gotten to they had gotten mid-way up the slope the ground had suddenly begun to shake beneath their feet as loud lumbering foot steps came their way. A giant come down from the mountain and pursued the company off of it, many of the members had almost fallen off the edge or trampled. But thankfully all of them had fled as the beast nigh came nigh and they took respite at the root of the slope, the giant did not pursue further. But as Redwick began to survey the company he had noticed that one had been missing, Therwen. His eyes widened in horror for what he thought may have become of her and he looked upon the slope once more and saw there she sat, moving little. He made haste to her aid with another member of the company along side himself, he would not leave her there to the threat of giants that lingered nigh. They raised her from the ground and carried her to whither the company had now paused to take counsel again.  She could not stand much and Redwick gazed upon her with worry and amidst all the speaking of the company he had heard a decision made that few members shall go first to cross the mountain where giants had made their home. Amongst those few were his best friend. He was then torn, for he thought that his friend would go forth into great peril and perhaps not return, it was not within him to sit and wait whilst his friend faces such peril- at least not without him.

So when the chosen few had begun to scale the slope he seized the opportunity when it was granted and ran after his best friend.

...Thus leaving Therwen behind.
