The Fishing Holes of Middle Earth

Have you ever wondered where to find the best trophy fish, or how to add to your darter collection? Is that big salmon still evading you? Come along to the Shire Museum of Hunting and Fishing, where Ponso Pondhopper, President of the Shire Angling Club, will share his secrets!

Join in the Crazy Catfish Catch and have your tasty catches magically transformed into a delicious supper by our highly trained cooks. Music and dancing and fireworks! A great time promised for all.

This is our second Open Day at the Shire Museum of Hunting and Fishing and this promises to be an even better event than the Grand Opening in June! Open to all, fisher-folk, hunters, or just lovers of fine food and drink! Take part in our Crazy Catfish Catch for a chance to win the Grand Prize, or just for the fun of it.

Programme

​2 pm Reception in the museum grounds
Food and drink available. See our catfish hatchery, meet with club members and old friends.

2.15 pm Museum tour and illustrated talk on the Fishing Holes of Middle Earth
With the aid of maps and trophy fish, Ponso Pondhopper will introduce the joys of fishing outside the bounds of the Shire, giving examples of places you can fish (relatively) undisturbed with examples of the fish you can hope to find. Learn where to find the best trout, salmon, darter and sturgeon.

2.45 pm Fishing trip to the ponds and Crazy Catfish Catch
Bring your rods for a fishing contest with a difference! You get to eat your catch! The contest starts at 3 pm and the one who catches the most catfish gets Grand 'Catfishes Whiskers' prize: A full set of fishing apparel and a choice of fishing trophy for their home. There will be consolation prizes for the runners up.

3.30 pm Catfish Bakeout
​With music and dancing. Let our highly trained chefs convert your catfish to a delicious supper.

4 pm Grand Raffle
​All winners of Harnkegger events and all those attending tonight will receive a chance to take part in the Shire Angling Club Annual Raffle with exciting prizes to be won!

4.15 pm Grand Firework display
