| Outward Appearance | One could mistake Iphant for a living statue, for so still can he stand when watching and listening, and so time-worn are his features. Indeed his appearance speaks of many years under the sun, but exactly how many is difficult to tell.
At his hip hangs a small carven cup and moleskin pouches, containing all the essentials required for eking out a living in the wild. And most importantly of all, a sharp knife is tucked away never far from reach. |

Background
'We may not be so high in his counsel as to tear bread with Lord Arador', said Iphant's father; 'but we are all kinsmen, even from afar. You, my son, will follow me into the wild, as I did my father, and his father before him. But I did not name you Iphant 'Long-lived' in vain ambition! For if foresight is upon me, you shall endure many trials and yet rival even the noblest of our kin in the span of years.'
Although Iphant's lineage ranks amongst the least of his kind, it is his remarkable longevity and mastery of the wild that has earned him respect amongst the Dúnedain. Of matters concerning birds and beasts, only the Brown Wizard would know more.
For almost seventy winters Iphant has waged a private war against trespassers of the North with seemingly very little provision. And though he still roams the borders of the old kingdoms, Iphant's nose has occasionally led him beyond the Misty Mountains where he is known as Ivan amongst the Northmen, and Greybark to the Dwarves.
From other Rangers he is distinguished most of all by his dog, Tana (from Sindarin meaning to "Point towards"), who loyally follows in her master's wake and silently alerts him to the dangers ahead.
