Background

Born to a Dunedain father and mother near Ithilien, Tothrandir was raised as a Ranger of the South. During his childhood, he loved to study old maps and books of the languages of Middle Earth, and would often spend hours reading them. Eventually, he would be trained in archery and swordsmanship, the former of which he became especially good at. It was for this reason that he was named as a scout for the Rangers when he was old enough.

For several years, he scouted around the Anduin river, leading for him to have many adventures and meet many inhabitants during this time. It was not until he was in his mid 20's that he was reassigned as a courier to Dol Amroth. During this time, he met a young woman named Marina, who he quickly fell in love with. After about a year, she became his wife, and soon became pregnant with a child. However, before she gave birth, she and Tothrandir were separated when she was captured during a raid of their camp by men from the East. After searching for her for months, Tothrandir gave up all hope of finding Marina. With the consent of his Captain, he moved North for a time.

It was during his travels North that he not only spent several years in Rohan, but also in the Forest of Fangorn, as well as in Dunland. During this time, he continued to train and practice his linguistic skills. By the time he finally arrived in Eriador, he was nearly 47.

Shortly after he arrived in the North Downs, he was quickly recruited by the Rangers of the North, who had heard of his journey North. He lived in Trestlebridge for a time, but soon would be stationed in the Lone Lands, where he would live with the Eglain for many years. Here he was told to scout the movements of the Enemy and also to deliver reports to Imladris.

Eventually, Tothrandir would be reassigned to Captain Aeruthuil, who would order him to scout around the Bree-lands instead. It was during this time that he would meet people like Siofran, who became one of his dearest friends. In fact, there were many instances where she even saved his life. He would also meet Brynleigh, who he would fall in love with. However, during such times of darkness, Tothrandir's sense of duty kept him from marrying her.

Eventually, he found out that his wife, Marina, had actually bore him a son before she died. This son, named Taruin by his mother, was taken in by an archer of a Gondorian company that found Marina and the boy. Once Taruin was old enough, his adoptive father told him the truth, and he set out to track down his father.

Tothrandir had learned of this son from an old friend on his last trip to Dol Amroth; however, he decided that his son would be better off in the life he had now. This all changed as soon as Taruin set foot in the Lone Lands. Tothrandir quickly tracked him down, and in a climactic moment, he told Taruin that he was his real father.

Taruin eventually went back to Gondor to forge his own path, though he did get several months to bond with Tothrandir. Now he serves as an archer in the ranks of Minas Tirith.

Most recently, Tothrandir was thought by all to be dead. During a mission just outside the border of Rohan, Tothrandir and his men were struck down by an ambush. The elf, Corlathir, was the only survivor in their company, and he told all of Tothrandir's sacrifice.

Tothrandir survived, but only because he was found by some Rohirrim. His body had been battered, and he had appeared to have been tortured for some time. They took him back to Rohan, where Tothrandir worked on one of the farms there once he was nursed back to health. After about 6 months, he bought a horse, and rode South.

Not much is known about his adventures down South other than the fact that he worked as a guard on a trade vessel near Dol Amroth. Now he has returned to Bree, and looks to reside there for a while. Now, he has returned North and knows that more adventures will surely await him.
