Outward Appearance

Afli's grey beard is tucked away neatly behind his bronze belt. Its hue may sometimes appear blue depending on the light available. His brown eyes seem fierce because of his heavy brow. And his face is creased and pale for his years. He walks with a heavy step and he breathes loudly.

In his daily life he is seen often in the course raiment of a miner. Sometimes in a worn sleeveless tunic, sometimes in a miner's smock, but always with a sturdy iron helmet on top of his head. On his back he carries a pack of tools and from his waist dangles a mattock. The mattock handle is carved with bars that represent each day he has survived in the iron mines.

When the situation calls for a more formal setting, Afli wears cloth of finer make. A long leather vest, decorated with handsewn dwarven motifs and fastened with a big belt. When the weather is chilly, he wears a hooded cloak and fingerless gloves tightened with leather bracers.

Whenever he is on the road, he goes garbed in the amour of his people; a coat of the finest of dwarf-mail and a sturdy iron helmet. And to protect himself from the rain and wind, he wears a dwarfmake cloak, with a hood that hides all but his big nose and long beard. He walks around with a large axe, forged in the iron-forges of the Iron Hills, though it has seen little use.

Nalfi Mailmaker of the Iron Hills

Background

Afli was born in the year 2838 TA in the Iron Hills where his great-great-grandfather Bróin fled with his sons after the onslaught of the dragons in the Grey Mountains. Here they mined the rust brown rock for iron and lived a quiet life in moderate prosperity.

Of all the crafts the dwarves have mastered since the awakening of the Seven, it was mining that Afli cared to pursue the most, like many of his forebears. It is no life of renown or splendour, but it is hard and honourable work nonetheless.

When Thorin II Oakenshield reclaimed Erebor, Afli's father Agnarr moved to the Lonely Mountain to enjoy a well-earned retreat from the mining life, but Afli and his brother Agni remained behind in the Iron Hills. Here they mined and forged to their hearts' content, with the promise of Dorwinion wine and salted meat at every day's end.

But in his heart, Afli greatly desires to see the splendour of Khazad-Dûm, for he has heard many tales of that ancient realm, and much he desires to walk its halls and toil in its mines. Thus Balin's quest for Moria has sparked his curiosity. In fact, he has always looked up to Balin ever since he was a stripling. Naturally, Afli's hopes are that he will succeed in his quest.

In the twenty-one years after Balin's departure, Afli lived out his life as an iron miner in the hold of Járnfast upon Carnen, the ancient fortress once erected by Grór, the youngest son of Dáin the First and heir to the throne of Durin's Folk. Now it is ruled by a lesser lord and fewer warriors call it home, yet in craftsmanship the realm has not abated, and many miners and tinkers and ironsmiths dwell there still.

With the growing shadow in the South, Agnarr, as elder of the family, has decided that they should move westwards, away from the portends of war. With a caravan of like-minded dwarves, they left the Iron Hills for the Blue Mountains. The road West was long and not without trouble, but along the way Afli discovered many things about the world that have had a profound impact on him.

Today, down in the mines of the Blue Mountains, Afli staunchly follows the veins of iron that run through the rock in the eternal twilight of the deep. It has been over a year since he started delving here, and while he has hardly known any other life than the mining life, he is turning his eye in earnest to the world above. For his thoughts wander to adventure and the great outdoors ever since he left the Iron Hills.
