| Outward Appearance | Barangolf has dark hair that he keeps shorter than is typical for an Elf and a somewhat shorter stature than average at only five eleven (but then, he is a wood elf). He has grey eyes that shine with an inner laughter and delight and a mouth that's quick to smile. He prefers light clothing in the browns and oranges of autumn foliage, the better to blend into the forest he calls home, but his boots are hard-soled and thick to keep from wearing out too quickly while he's on the road.
He has a constant companion in his horse, a sable gelding named Glasdal. Glasdal is as friendly and easy-going as Barangolf, although perhaps prone to being a bit too trusting with strangers who might offer an apple treat. |

Background
Barangolf was born in the year II 1590 in Greenwood the Great. His parents, Aenuial and Barandir, were Silvan Elves who had lived in the woods for centuries before the coming of Oropher and his Sindarin followers, though they accepted their nobler brethren as leaders.
During the war of the Last Alliance Barangolf and many friends and relatives followed their king into battle. At this time Barangolf was 1844 years old. The end of the war saw not only the death of Gil-Galad and King Oropher but also the majority of Oropher's forces. Barangolf was one of the few who had marched from Mirkwood to return, bringing news that Oropher's son Thranduil was now King and that his father and brothers were killed.
Following the Last Alliance the Elves of Mirkwood predominantly kept to themselves. Barangolf and his family moved toward the outskirts of the forest as darkness encroached, forcing the Elves into a smaller and smaller area. They made their living trading with other settlements, including Dwarves from the grey mountains and woodsmen, and later Esgaroth and Dale.
From a political perspective the escape of roughly a dozen prisoners from Thranduil's halls was an embarrassment, even more so when some of the men from his village admitted that the Dwarves had popped out of their barrels upon arriving at Esgaroth. The summons from their king to march to the laketown and demand reparation from the Dwarves was something anyone living under the Elven king's demesne couldn't ignore and so Barangolf and his relatives once again set out to war.
Not that this was particularly impressive, given that they didn't even have steel weapons, but they were in general quite good marksmen and besides, why wouldn't the Dwarves admit that they owed the Elves for trespassing? The return of the Necromancer meant that travelers simply couldn't be trusted, and the Dwarves had refused to state their business, which meant they were suspect.
The arrival of orcs and warg riding goblins meant that a hasty alliance had to be cobbled together, however, and Barangolf found himself for the second time in his life in a battle. Fortunately this one was much less devastating than the Last Alliance, though certainly not entirely devoid of casualties. But he was able to return home with all of his relatives.
When the Dwarves repopulated Erebor, Barangolf began trading there as well, sending wines and venison in exchange for pretty baubles and trinkets that the Elves didn't have the materials to make on their own.
When Mirkwood was attacked in the third age 3018 Barangolf began venturing further afield, his work as a merchant allowing him some leeway to travel about and see what was happening in the wide world.
Barangolf is mischievous and sometimes overly friendly. He doesn't really have what other people might call boundaries, feeling utterly at ease teasing even those he doesn't know. He isn't malicious, and tends towards light-hearted ribbing, though the more sensitive or formal people don't always take well to his immediate assumption of familiarity.
As a trader he’s literate and enumerate. Most of his wares are things along the lines of apples and sweet meats (from Mirkwood) which are traded to the men of Dale for wines and elaborate toys. Sometimes he also trades with the Dwarves of Erebor, though this is a recent development.
