Mubben was born and raised in Erebor, along with a small amount of the clan. It was there where he first learnt his skills with engineering and with an axe, and he was a Captain at the time of Smaug's attack. Mubben helped many of his kin escape, and he and the other Pistonhands of Erebor fled to join the Pistonhands of the White Mountains. Here, Mubben began learning the forge in far greater depths, swearing that he would one day return to take back his home. After many years, Clan Pistonhand was forced to leave the White Mountains due to cave-ins and rock slides, rendering the mines unusable, and the homesteads unsafe. It was upon leaving that Mubben caught wind of Thorin Oakenshield's quest to retake Erebor, and Mubben left immediately with his brother Frugli for their home. He joined the battle of the Five Armies, where he was grievously wounded. He was dragged out of the Battle by a nearby Hunter, a Female Dwarf by the name of Faii. She tended to his wounds, and he survived with only an ugly scar along his chest to show far it. 

In the years after the Battle, Mubben was wed to Faii, with whom he sired two sons and a daughter. They settled in the Blue Mountains, where Faii would work as a cook for the many dwarves of Gondamon, and Mubben could hone his skills with metalworking at the forges of Ered Luin in relative peace. Mubben would help defend Gondamon at the Siege of Gondamon, and would be made Captain fo the Stone Guard for his heroic and selfless efforts. However, following the disappearance of his eldest son, Mubben retired his position after only 20 years, and took leave of the Blue Mountains, venturing as far as the Iron Hills in search of his son. After several years, Mubben learnt that his son has been slain by a band of Orcs whilst mining in the Misty Mountains.
