A Letter to Heligin

Stopping, Guri looked at Heligin’s simple cabin. After all, how large a house did the Lord of streams and lakes need? He was rarely there she imagined. An this morning the tiny home was dark, the fire out. She slipped the folded letter into the mailbox and turned to go stood thinking about him.

Heligin represented the absolute best of this kin, no small feat out of the five hundred or so people still calling the Company home.

Heli,

I am sure by now the ripples of Deorla’s leaving and her parting shots have begun to sting less. You have likely guessed that I would not survive all this and stay with the kin.

I want to first say how sorry I am that this happened. Sorry I ever took her silly assignment, sorry for the part I may have forced her hand. I am relieved she finally admitted what she is. That does not, however, come with any joy, only an empty assurance that you finally understand.

You, dear friend, are the best of the world, kind and generous, ever positive. Although I know some regret lurks underneath, you do not let it paint your world with negativity.

I hope her final words solidified with you; just how little she cared about the people of the kin. The very ones she professed to love. She was angry and trapped, lashing out at those who meant more to her, because it is easier to be cruel and much harder to genuinely love, or be kind.

Never lose your joy, my friend. It shines around you like a halo. I know you may stay duty bound to those left behind… Duty I understand. It is mine to do good, to chase the shadow of evil, in other ways. I will always consider you a friend. You know how to find me, should you have need of me.

I wish you well Heligin, never stop what you do. It is magic.

Always,

Guriwen
