((This is the story as was told to Faurilion by his father, known by him and those he told it.))
Crithon Left-handed was a Falathrim mariner serving under Círdan during the conflict between Sindarin elves and the forces of Morgoth. As a mariner, his task was raiding and harassing Orcish forces from the sea, but on one such mission, he fell victim to an orcish commander, having been cut across his chest and losing his right arm, thus earning his alias. He was taken back to Falas to be healed, but the orcish blade was poisoned and he fell into a deep sleep, balancing between Arda and the realm of Mandos. And so he would remain until the arrival of the Ñoldor, for it was then when an elf-maiden from Fingolin's party visited Falas and was able to purge his body of poison, for her skills and wisdom were greater than that of the Sindar.
Tuvindiel was her name, and she took it upon herself to introduce the injured mariner to the new world to which he had awoken, for before his injury, only stars could be seen upon the sky and their Ñoldor cousins were but a distant memory. They spent many days along one another and bonded during this time, so much so that love arose between them, and they were wed and lived together in Falas. Through both the carnage of Faënor's sons and Morgoth, they lived and escaped the sinking of Ossiriand alongside Círdan and the remaining falas elves, settling in what remained of their old lands - Lindon. And it was there they brought a son into Arda.
They named him Celebirion, - Silver Son - after his mother, for her hair was of silver and his was too, while his father had dark hair. The birth took a great toll on Tuvindiel and she became tired, ceasing her journeys and staying home in Harlond to take care of her newborn son. And Crithon undertook fewer voyages, though he was needed at times for he was an exceptional navigator. Celebirion grew up by the sea, hearing tales of his father's voyages and at times even joining him, and from this upbringing sprung a deep affinity for the waters of Arda and he had thus decided to become a mariner himself. He served alongside his father for a time, but Tuvindiel grew lonely in Harlond and pleaded with them to stay, and they agreed to her wish. But Celebirion was a young elf and his desire for sea was too strong, so after some time, he left once more, though his father remained alongside his mother and had not sailed again until the time came to leave for Valinor.
Celebirion sailed for a long time, and even as the maritime tradition of the Sindar faded, he remained true to the old Falathrim ways, sailing, fishing and diving for pearls alongside his like minded crewmates. And so it was for a long time.
One day, as his ship sailed past the shores near Forlond, he saw an elf-maiden resting on a beach. As her long hair of raven black colour moved with the sea breeze, her fair face was revealed and she was singing to herself a song of her love for the waters and sands and the coasts of Arda. In his heart sprung a flame that he had not felt before, and he would seek any excuse he could find to sail past that beach time and time again, but the maiden was nowhere to be seen. Just as he was about to give up hope, he saw her at last and to the distress of his crewmates, he threw himself overboard and swam towards her, for he did not wish to lose her again. And they found fondness for one another, for she too came to the beach often in hopes of seeing the silver-haired mariner, and their hearts became one.
She was Linnrien, and Celebirion saw in her the beauty of the sea and decided not to sail again if not by her side, so he built a small vessel for them to sail together for a time as husband and wife. Linnrien was no mariner, but she wished to see the coasts and shallows of middle earth that she held so close to her heart. For many years they sailed together, but as time went on, the desire to sail west grew stronger within them and so, they decided to leave the sea for a time and settle back in Lindon, for they still had one matter left unresolved. They found their place in Mithlond and within a few years, a third member came to grace their household.
Celebirion and Linnrien would decide to name their newborn son Faurilion - shore-son - for that is where their love began. His birth was a rather rare occasion at the time, as few elves still chose to become parents in such uncertain times. But both Celebirion and his wife held deep love for Arda and wanted the opportunity to show its beauties to their child before they departed to Valinor, never to see its shores again. He bore his father's silver hair and his mother's cheerful eyes and from the very beginnings of his life, he had a strong connection to the sea. He would best fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves - Ossës lullaby, as his mother would call it - and spent many of his day playing among the fish in the shallows of Lhûn. Linnrien would often say, perhaps in jest, or perhaps not, that Ossë and Uinen were his second parents.
As he grew, his interest in the sea only strengthened. His father taught him to swim and dive and told him many things from his days as a mariner, unknowingly sparking in him a desire to sail. But he had no boat at hand, so Faurilion had to be rather creative. He spent his free time walking the shores and collecting good pieces of driftwood and a week later, he crafted a rudimentary raft, barely large enough to stand on. He rushed his parents to the sea to show them his creation, of which he was rather proud, and he stood upon it like a true sailor and even as the waves rocked his tiny raft, he did not fall nor waver. And so, his mother gave him his second name - Thorntail, meaning Stoutfoot in sindarin, though she did not realise the second meaning it holds in westron. His parents laughed at the sight, glad to see their son happy, thinking it just a game. But Faurilion would continue his efforts, crafting larger and more complex rafts. He learned much about woodworking from his father, who worked on building ships alongside Círdan in Mithlond for the past few centuries, and Faurilion used this knowledge to make his vessels stronger and sturdier. After a time, Faurilion found like minded friends and they sailed on the rafts together. On the day his father saw him raising for the first time a sail over their raft and tossing their crude paddles, he realised this was no longer but a child’s play. And so he gifted them the ship he and Linnrien sailed upon before they became parents. A small craft, able to be crewed by as little as three but able to carry many more, built light and fast. And she bore the name Uinenried - Uinen’s Crown, for it sat upon her hair like one.
Thus, Faurilion had finally become a sailor and the waters of Arda became open to him. Alongside his crewmates, they would set out to explore as much as they could in the short time they had left.
