The Noldor had been taught not to get too close to the Prince...

...out of respect, certainly, but also out of fear.
But Silariaa knew none of this: she followed him from the beginning. She called him her bright sovereign, though Maedhros ignored her. She was afraid of things and Maedhros laughed at her. Why shouldn't Maedhros? She was nothing to him. A wisp. A frightened Teler. She knew nothing about being a warrior. She was especially afraid of eagles and horses. But still, while they were training, Silariaa sat fletching his arrows with feathers from an eagle. When she saw the pastures she was so terrified, she hid behind a tree. Maedhros must have wanted her to be afraid; that day Maedhros helped feed the horses he led them in Silariaa's direction.
When the horses trotted after her, Silariaa screamed and ran and Maedhros laughed. Maedhros had no need of a champion or anything else.
"Let her run! All the way back to the shore where she belongs."
