The fifth major battle of the First Age, fought between the Union of Prince Maedhros and the Forces of Morgoth. The Battle ended the hopes of Elves and men ever defeating Morgoth, who gained control over most of Beleriand.
((In writings in this Chronicle we refer to the first and older version of the Battle as edited by Christopher Tolkien in The Grey Annuals and the Quenta Silmarillion, rather than Tolkien's later alterations in the Narn I Chin Hurin , where there is no mention of the betrayal by the folk of Ulfang. ))
