Thamas Lorn, 44th day of Echuir
I have dispatched Aearlinn, Istuir and Culir to examine this stone of unwholesome nature near the banks of Baranduin. I had hoped the great wisdom of the Hidden Vale's Lord would quickly allay our fears and advise a course of action on how to proceed - if necessary. However, no word has returned since I sent reply to Imladris.
It was a chance meeting with Adunzil and Meduion, two of the scions of Arnor, that brought this troubling matter to the fore of our minds once more. They bore tidings of other, similarly evil stones in other parts of Eriador. What they bode, I fear will end not well...not at all.
I was surprised to hear that a woman of these northern Edain - Elgaraen of name - had raised their discovery of another fell-stone found in the North Downs with other of our folk in Imladris, but left feeling less than welcome - I cannot conceive such a cool response to their observations! Surely some misinterpretation is to blame?
Imladris - like Mithlond - is a jewel of hope, trust and light to all folk of good heart, be they Edhil or Secondborn. If the ears of Imladris should ever close to those bringing word from the less blessed corners of Eriador, then all is indeed not well! Yes...surely a misunderstanding? Should I return to Imladris soon, I shall perhaps hear the truth of the incident.
Aearlinn...I could see her disquiet at the lack of counsel from the east. She had been keen to inspect this artefact for herself before, and I did not permit her...perhaps the time has come to trust in her wisdom? She might well glean some measure of understanding of the nature, origins and purpose of the stone, and offer some clue that her mentors do not possess. That these stones appear widespread across Eriador is worrisome. Still...I am comforted a little by the certain knowledge that none taint the soil of Lindon.
Our camp disbanded, with agreement to meet with the folk of Adunzil in days not far off. I deem them better placed to maintain a watch upon these dark things: they seem to be found in corners of Arnor of old, and must surely have their origins in the history of that folk?
Istuir departed with Aearlinn this morning; our scholar of lore had determined purpose in her stride. I can only wonder at what they will find when they arrive. She is indeed a capable gwathel and I have confidence in her judgment; her enthusiasm to do that which she loves is obvious, and with Culir and Istuir - fine warriors both - at her side, I shall worry less...though, as ever, I will feel relief only upon their safe return to Thamas Lorn.
The year draws to its end. I wonder what awaits us in the next?
