Night travelers

What is this? What is this? He squeaked in a light voice to himself, as he nimbly climbed higher up the tree, not only for protection but also to get a better view of the unnatural red and yellow light filling a spot in the forest. Should be asleep, yes asleep. He was both annoyed and curious, being awakened when most of the forest slept, by the strange glow. With swift agile movements, few other creatures could match, he reached the top branches and came to a stop, trying to figure out what his eyes told him far below.

On the ground there was a gentle flickering blaze of colors that reminded him of the big eye in the sky that brings daylight and joy. As he tilted his head quickly up and down, trying to make sense of it, he noticed the thin gray smoke climbing out of the flickering lights. The gray smoke traveled slowly up and towards him as he picked up its sour smell. Bad smell! BAD! He screeched in frustration and shaked his head back and forth, while standing up on his back legs, trying to get taller and away from the smell that reeked upwards and into his nostrils.

His screeching and sudden movement by standing up, made something large near the light stir. What? What is that? He squeaked in surprise as he realized the presence of a large creature sitting still as a stone near the light, eyeing him. Two legs? Two legs here? He tilted his head on alert and was ready to leap away if the two legs decided to move towards him. They sometimes offered crumbs, delicious crumbs… sometimes they offered final darkness. What may it be? What? He lowered himself and scurried down the branch and behind the trunk of the tree, trying to hide if the two legged creature were hostile.

Once safe behind the trunk, he nimbly turned around and took a quick peek towards the creature which seemed to ignore him and seemed to stare in another direction instead. No dark? Yes no dark. Maybe food? Maybe crumbs? The last word was said with a more optimistic tone. He tilted his head eagerly again as he continued to watch the creature, but to his disappointment the creature continued to ignore him, and even worse, did not offer him crumbs.

A snort from another direction almost made him jump to another tree in panic, but his curiosity stopped him. It was a familiar sound. Yes! Yes, a four leg! He remembered, proud of himself doing so. Those were good creatures, but they sadly never offered crumbs. Looking in the direction of the sound he saw a four leg in the colors that reminded him of his favorite nuts. It was standing there at the edge of the light, partly hidden by the darkness that was covering the forest, watching the two legs who still sat there as a rock. What does it want? What? The four legs raised his head, as he was trying to get the two legs' attention, but it seemed to no avail. As the four legs raised his head, he noticed a tiny, barely visible reflection near its head. What? What is that? But before he could figure it out, the four legs turned around and disappeared into the darkness.

He scurried quickly over to another branch, trying to follow, but suddenly stopped and looked back towards the two legs. Watch! Watch out! But only the flickering light remained, which was slowly dying out and letting the forest return to darkness. The two legs were gone, like he never had been there. Puzzled and wary of the night travelers around him, he decided to return to his hole and find comfort and security in sleep.
