Overview

A painted map of the Firienhús hangs in Feiorn's workshop, describing his holdings in the Firien Wood. The map is framed humbly and presented in a central location, serving as a constant reminder of what he and his wife, Cerrina, had built together. The line in the lower right reads "Firienhús: a half-acre home for a humble two, where love is abundant and troubles are few."

Approach

East of the Eastfold, upon the westernmost reaches of Anórien, lies the Firienhús.

Similar to Beorn's lodge, the home is surrounded by trees and a wall of thorn hedges, tall enough to obscure view and blend seamlessly with the woods. The residence often goes unnoticed to passing travelers on the Great West Road, an inconspicuous slice of comfort in the shadow of the Halifirien

A gentle, branching creek from the Mering Stream flows under the hedgewall. Its water and its fish pass quietly through the roots and brambles.

Two entrances provide access to the claim, a westward gate and a southward gate. The two are identical; large heavy oak doors with neither knocker nor bell. Should a stranger stumble upon the gate and approach, a faint barking can be heard on the other side; a watchdog notifying their masters of an unannounced guest.

Garden and Pasture

The land enclosed by the thorn hedge is filled with wildflowers, open-pastures, and humble garden beds. Fruit trees flank each of the gates, threatening unaware visitors with the occasional apple or peach to the head. An orchard to the east of the workshop sports a seasonal variety, including pears, cherries, and apricots.

A variety of flowers and vegetables can be found growing in the mixed garden. Curiously, the alliums, such as onion, garlic, scallion, shallot, leek, and chive are grouped together in kinship. Grains and berry bushes are often grown next to the gristmill, providing feed for the nearby animals. All of the cultivars seem especially lively, as if well-nurtured by the soil of the Firienholt. No shortage of tree-litter compost keeps the plants well-fed.

The animals that graze within the comfort of the claim are tame and gentle-mannered, fearing neither the night nor the predators that prowl in it. Goats prance about freely, though often kept away from the gardens by the watchdog. A flock of ducks and chickens are governed by a single, venerable goose, who dissuades any quarrels between the two factions. The goose's heir, a fatherless gosling, shares a similar temperament to its queenly mother. To the south-east of the claim, bell-shaped beehives—characteristic of beorning design—provide an ample supply of honey.

Workshop — A well-used workshop sits at the northern end of the claim. Upon entering, a humble fireplace offers it warmth. When stoked and sufficiently fed, the round-bellied hearth can become a gentle forge, useful in repairing and honing equipment. Tools are organized and kept stowed away in chests and footlockers. Saws, chisels, hammers, and more, all seem Rohirrim in origin, with few Gondorian and even Elven designs—oaken handles are flourished with subtle carvings. Gardening and forestry equipment is stored on racks, ready for use.

It is here, in the workshop, that Feiorn does most of his woodworking and carpentry. From artisanal furniture to hearty bows, Feiorn practices a diverse range of woodworking disciplines—with a diverse range of specialty tools to match. He often ensures nothing goes to waste: sawdust is used as wood filler, small branches are used as kindling, bark is made into mulch, and leaves are turned into compost.

Smoke House — The smoke house is a rounded outbuilding to the south-east of the claim. It is adjoined to an outdoor kitchen, allowing fresh hunt and harvest to be processed readily. At the center of the near-circular smoking room is a pile of smoldering coals, pulled from nearby ovens. Hanging within the room are fish and meats; those nearer to the center cook quicker, and are intended for immediate consumption, whereas those further away dry out more gradually, intended for long term storage.
