9. Rude Awakening

Dem tried desperately to rouse Egfor from his dream. And when Egfor did, it was through Dem but his own will. Egfor threw up in the chamber pot while Dem held back Egfor’s hair. The poor didn’t even seem to know Dem was there. At least not until he finished retching when he finally seemed to be aware of his surroundings.

Taking away the chamber pot, Dem gave him a glass of water and was ready to provide more if needed. Egfor appeared to return to this life, for Dem was certain the dragon had claimed Egfor again. He wrapped the fur blanket around them both and rocked Egfor to and fro. He hummed softly to him, the music slowly turning into the words of the song he had been slowly writing about his love for Egfor.

You are my one
You are my only
You are my true love
Don’t leave me.

Before I met you
The skies were grey, not blue
Now that I love you
I mind not the skies hue.

You are my one
You are my only
You are my true love
Don’t leave me.

As he sang and felt the trembling leave Egfor, Dem felt himself relax. The gods knew he was scared. He admitted it to Egfor because it was the right thing to do. He would not say out loud to anyone because he feared Thorbeck was right; this would be their last adventure. Killing a dragon was near impossible. Today he would work on building a ballista and pray it would be the answer they needed. It had to be one they could dismantle and transport easily. For now, time was of the essence. He didn’t know why he knew this; he just did.

Who fills completely my empty soul?
You do, you do.
Who makes me completely whole?
You do, you do.

You are my one
You are my only
You are my true love
Don’t leave me.

Tears threatened to overflow, but he kept them at bay, concentrating on pouring his love and security through the rings. He would protect Egfor at all costs. That was the truth.
