Why, one merry old day in the end of spring
A hobbit there was who's like was unseen
He had the whole Valley up in a fright
As now the day was turned to night
For gone is Bilbo Baggins!
Where now does the road go?
Twist and turn, to-and-fro!
Over bridge or through stream
Master Baggins is lost it seems!
Lord Elrond, oh, how he so very tried
To soothe the wild and wailing cries
Of dear Celeblir who was weeping
While Lord Glorfindel sat keeping
watch over it all!
Where now does the road go?
Twist and turn, to-and-fro!
Up the mountain all clad in white
Bilbo Baggins is lost in the night!
Now Gloin on the slope had seen him there
But dread he swiftly bore as unaware
His sentries rang the warning bell
Came stormy snowbeasts fell
Oh, for Eru's sake!
Where now does the road go?
Twist and turn, to-and-fro!
Left or right, goblins cry aloud
Old Bilbo, you did us proud!
Why clever words did Old Baggins say
To drive the goblins all into a wild fray
Though locked away in Goblin Town
His hero's growing battle did sound
How relieved was Master Baggins!
Where now does the road go?
Twist and turn, to-and-fro!
Back home to Rivendell
With such a tale to tell!
Now safe and sound in the Valley dear
Did all gather around him to hear
His wild tale of adventure bold
From valley to mountain cold
The road goes ever on!
